Is it typical/preferred that yellow diamonds be mounted on yellow gold prongs?

I have a 3 stone ring I am looking to reset - I love the setting that looks like the Tiffany lucida setting but they are unable to make the middle prongs yellow gold due to the style.

Would anyone ever consider mounting a yellow diamond on white gold/platinum prongs?

PS my side diamonds are white diamond...

Thanks for your advice!

I had a consultation tonight with a custom designer at Birks to get the three stones reset. He said he could make the prongs for the yellow stone yellow gold and join it to the rest of the setting/band which would be in platinum. I was concerned this would weaken the setting but he said it wouldnt. Is that true?

I spoke to another diamond guy and he said it would... now I"m confused?

Heres a pic of what I wanted done...

So essentially the middle would be yellow gold, rest in platinum. See how the loops are? They would be 2 metals joined together....

You should be about to mount the yellow diamond in yellow gold and then have the band and other stones in white gold/platinum. I definitely agree with Swanky, yellow gold claws for yellow diamonds look amazing!!

I bought two radiant cut canary diamonds (1.02tcw so 1/2 carat each) earlier this year and had them set as stud earrings with a halo of brilliant cut white diamonds set in white gold. The yellow centre stones are set in yellow gold claws, the rest is white gold and they look fantastic. I have a very good jeweller though, maybe they aren't all comfortable working with two metals?

Speaking of yellow diamonds, have you seen the thread on the Sotheby's auction? Hello ladies!!

I like yellow prongs and gallery on canary diamonds, I think it looks classier especially paired with wg or plat band. Complete wg or plat setting is pretty, but it's something about the yg that makes he canary diamond pop!

it's fine to mix, they wouldn't do it if they thought it wasn't a good idea.
I use a white gold band w/ platinum prongs for my solitaire, it's fine.

usually it is done it yellow gold to better blend in and to intensify the yellow color . BUT in the end it also depends on the actual grade and color of the yellow diamond. some lemon or bordering lime yellow stones can look better in plat or white gold prongs

My mom has this RHR with yellow and white diamonds, and all the yellows have yellow halo settings, and the white have platinum. It's gorgeous, I'll post it here sometime.

I agree with everyone here that the yellow diamonds look best set with yellow prongs as it helps bring out the color. although platinum is stronger than yellow gold, the vast majority of rings are set in gold with gold prongs. I think your center stone will be secure in that setting with gold prongs...especially when you consider that there are 2 stones on each side to help protect the center prongs from every day wear & tear.

I hope you enjoy your ring!

there has to be a "seam"...& you will see where the white & the yellow metals touch. but if you mean: will there be a joint that you can feel? then the answer is "no" there shouldn't be one.
