I am helping my sister buy diamond cluster earrings. The design is generally a center round diamond and six similarly sized round diamonds around the center. I noticed that some clusters have central prong set diamonds while others have the center diamond without prongs and tucked under the outer ring of diamonds. I suppose the latter gives a more continuous look to the earring, but I think the use of prongs on all stones keeps them secure, shows them all off and keeps them level with each other. Anyone with detailed knowledge of cluster mountings have an opinion on this?

Bezel or prong set, the diamonds should be secure.

Prongs can in time loosen, so even these should be checked regularly.

The only settings of larger centre stones I'd worry about are tension-set. I absolutely love the look, but I had an interesting diamond set that way but it was too scary to wear out so I sold it. I have a beautiful red garnet set similarly, worth the risk.

If diamonds are small and pave set, they are shallow-set and could potentially fall out. However, I'm not sure that's what you're talk inking about here.

Agree, prongs will be best, although make sure they are nice and tight else may catch in her hair! Also, has she considered buying solitaire studs plus jackets? That way she can control the quality of the centre diamonds (make sure they’re certificate) and have two different looks.
