Mother-of-pearl necklace that looks like regular pearls?

I saw a pearl strand in a jewelry store and it looked just like freshwater pearls however it was very cheap(less than $30). SA told me it was mother-of-pearl. I have never seen it done this way as mop is usually inlaid in jewelry. These “pearls” seem to be slightly heavier than regular pearls as well. I asked SA if it was some kind of metal/wood covered with mother-of-pearl but she didn’t know. Anyone else seen this or knows how its made?

I know you can get MOP beads.. so maybe that's what it's made of?

probably they are plastic beads covered with mother of pearl, or finish to look like pearls. or they can be glass.
