We moved a while ago and had several things put in storage until we were ready to move them to our new place, including a watch in a safe. Well I just opened the safe and the leather watch strap was covered in mold. I wiped it all off and cleaned the strap with leather cleaner, but the smell is still overpowering. Any suggestions how to get rid of this smell before I have the strap replaced?

Leather cleaner isn’t the best option for cleaning mold off leather items. Use the search function or check here

Leather is porous, so the mold might have penetrated, and will be impossible to remove. The persistent odour indicates that to be the case. Your best bet is to replace the strap ASAP.

In the meantime, isolate the strap so as not to contaminate the box or any other items the strap has been in contact with. Wipe down the safe carefully with a white vinegar/water solution. Mold spores are microscopic, spread easily, and can be hard to get rid of.

You’re stuck with the smell I’m afraid until you clean the strap properly, and air it out, or just chuck it.

Good luck!

Thank you! I hadn’t even thought of wiping down the safe. Will do this asap.
