Miles Cahn, cofounder of Coach, died 2/10/17 at age 95

Mr. Cahn founded the company with his wife, Lillian, in New York City in 1961. They sold the upscale handbag business in 1985 for a reported $30 million.

Dumb question but why do coach items say est. 1941 if the Cahns began the business in 1961?

I think the New York Times got some of the details wrong. According to Wikipedia, Coach existed in 1941 as a family run shop that made small leather goods. The Cahns took over in 1946. Bonnie Cashin started designing for Coach in 1961.
