Hey all! I was hoping for advice/suggestions on a shoe size. I current have 2 pairs of shoes from Hermes, in different sizes, and am looking into a third pair. My first pair are ankle boots and they are a size 42.5

My second pair are these loafers and they are in size 42. Both shoes fit me well.

My confusion is what size to get a new pair in. I went to the boutique to try them on but they only had one style in. I tried these other loafers on, and found that the 41.5 were the best fit - the 42 were too big even though 42 in my other loafers were a great fit.

So that’s three different sizes. The complication is that I decided I’d rather pass on a second pair of loafers and get this pair instead, for a different look, but they were out of stock. I’m not sure which size to ask my SA to order now. Trying to avoid ordering the wrong size and having to return them as much as possible. These are the pair I’d like:

I’d love any advice! My SA is holding on ordering any right now, I told her I’m going to buy them next month around my birthday.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I understand your dilemma. Shoe fit is very personal.
42.5 is usually my optimum size, 42 is usually too small, if there are no half sizes I would take 43.
Only the other day I bought 43 because 42.5 was not right.
Why the boutique cannot get two sizes for you to try I do not understand.
Assuming you will not be paying upfront for these I would ask for the 42.5; if they are not a good fit have them sent back and the better size ordered as a replacement.

If it means that you cannot have them for your birthday, disappointing, but so be it.

I am not a man but my Destin loafers are .5 larger than all my other Hermes shoes. For some reason they run small hence taking them in a half size up. So if your Destin loafers are a 42 I’d guess that your true Hermes size is a 41.5.

Good luck! The shoe sizing is a huge pain because of you guess wrong the right size is never available.

Ask your SA if this new double monk strap runs larger or smaller than the loafer you own. If there is a single monk strap or lace up in the store, it might provide a relevant data point to your SA for you to try that one. Or, ask if the sizing on the monk strap is similar to any John Lobb of a similar shape or last, if any are available there. (In NY John Lobb is adjacent bc H owns John Lobb)

The person in charge of shoes should be able to give a more accurate guess even if your SA is unfamiliar with these two models.

IMO, the chunky loafers (the ones you decided against) run a bit large, so my experience is like yours. And, boot sizes don’t always translate into the same size as shoes.

DH has shoes from H in a range like you. The clearest measurement is with a universal device like the brannock (that metal device that you stand on). Once you know that (or your size in cm) you can start to take note of which styles of which brands work.

ETA: I apologize for the length of this post, but if your boot was bought to accommodate a slightly thicker sock, I might chance going down a half size.

Happy birthday in advance :)

No apologies, I appreciate the detailed reply! I’m not sure if there is a shoe person at Dallas given its size, I know my SA disappeared in the back for a while trying to find a comparable shoe for sizing without luck. I’m think I’ll see if she can order it in 42, and go from there. Hopefully it’ll be a fit and if not we can do a new one. Thanks again!

@MacawGuy , I linked to the Guys thread and asked for any feedback to come here (hope that’s okay) I also texted my former SA, who is a guy who loves shoes, to see if he has happened to try these on bc I thought DH might also like them

@WhiteBus, I don’t know Dallas, but in NY it can be impossible to get two pairs transferred if they were not originally ordered for the buy. (And if they were originally ordered, one may be earmarked for a client before they get to the store) Another store might agree to send a 42 but then demand the other size in exchange which makes it almost impossible to compare in real time.

BC of this, if a client wants a pair from another store, he may have to purchase a size, sight unseen, and then execute an exchange or return if it isn’t correct. NY is particularly hard for shoes bc it’s such a popular category. I waited oh maybe 18 months for gold/noir chpres for myself, before settling for. Pair of noir for DH. (In that time I did get a B25 gold lol) .

The shoe SAs grab popular models for their own clients as they come in, so if your SA is not in the shoe dept l, you may be out of luck  I hope for @MacawGuy ‘s sake, that it’s easier in Dallas
