my DF lost his watch yesterday. :( It was a dear gucci.

I am thinking of saving up to get him another watch. hmmm I am thinking of getting him a Rolex or a TAG. hmmm I also like a Cartier watch.. but it's currently out of my league. :(

Does anyone own a Rolex or a TAG? May I see some pictures or reviews? My DF has a very small wrist... his lost gucci watch was perfect size for him. I am not sure whether it was a 35mm or 36mm or even smaller... :/

What do yall think of a Rolex Explorer? or DateJust?

I would categorize Cartier (at least the models I've seen) as a "dress" watch, as opposed to a casual style.

Rolex and TAG are both sportier.

Do you know the model of Gucci he lost? If you can find a picture we can look up the description and try find out the mm size.

I personally like how the Explorer looks on me, as I have a larger wrist and the DateJust is quite small in comparison. I also find the Explorer more sporty/casual, and more youthful. The DateJust is classic Rolex, demands instant recognition, but...I sometimes think it's too mature for me right now.

Personally not a fan of TAG, but there are thousands, if not millions, of guys who love the brand!

I really like the Explorer. Also take a look at the Submariner (attached). I was reminded of how fab it is when I came across that shot today in Harper's mag.

For Tag, the Carrera is gorgeous and sporty.

I recommend also looking at Bell & Ross, IWC and Swiss Military. Men have a lot of great casual options!

My fiancé has the dark blue face tag carrera and he LOVES it and always gets a lot of compliments. The dial is 36mm on his I think? And he has a small wrist. When we went shopping, he preferred this to the rolexs he saw. And I loved the thinner bezel on them because its easier to dress up if need be.

I like the Tag Aquaracer 500. Tag Heuer is a very popular brand that uses ETA movements. Rolex uses in-house movements and has a strong history; of course you are going to pay a lot more for that. Tag Heuer $2800 vs. Explorer $5800.

I prefer the Rolex Explorer over the DJ, just based on looks. Not a fan of the Explorer II though. Datejust is a little more dressy and has a lot of options in dials. You could also look at the Milgauss for an all-around watch, or the Submariner for a more sporty piece.

Which Gucci model did he own?

This is the one he lost. He mentioned TAG awhile back, but he also said he doesn't like it because the dial is too big for his wrist. His dad pasted down to him a Cartier (don't know which model it was, but it was very big on him so he doesn't keep it).

I like the DateJust and the Explorer. The DateJust is $6,400 and the Explorer is $6,200. Of course I can't afford neither at this very moment. :p

I've looked at other Cartier models, their dials range from 39-42mm?? That's huge huh?

I am just looking for a model (either Rolex or Cartier or any other respectable watch maker name) to set it as my goal to save up for his "IT" watch. :D

I will check the Carrera out. I will also look at the ones you recommended, thank you!

He likes the band and the dial of this watch, which he lost.

I am trying to find one that fits him. Dressy and casual.

I also like the Explorer over the DJ, just because it looks more simple. I called the Rolex provider yesterday and I got a quote of $6,200 on the Explorer... where did you see $5,800?

What's the difference between ETA movements and in-house movements? :D

Yes, I am looking at an all-around watch. I actually want to get him a watch asap, and my current budget is around 1k. Any recommendations? his old one looks something like this.

I don't know the dial size of that watch, but that one fits him perfectly.

That Gucci of his was a 38mm. That is a decent size watch and you could probably go with anything up to a 42mm without noticing much difference.

An AD wil quote you the retail price, but you may be able to get a discount; every AD is different. I just grabbed the prices from swissluxury.com.

ETA movements are made by the Swatch group which owns Omega, Breguet, Blancpain, Tissot and others. An ETA movement can come in four grades from "Standard" to "Chronometer". Most lower end watches will use a standard, while higher end watches will use "TOP" or "Chronometer" grade. ETA Movements are used in both The Swatch Group brands as well as many of others, like Breitling, because they make an excellent, proven product.

An in-house movement is designed and built entirely by the company that builds the watch. These watches will cost more because of the prestige and the cost required by the company to build the movements.

With a budget of 1K you should look into a Longines HydroConquest at 39mm with an ETA movement. You should be able to get one at an AD for under 1K.

Another option, if you can stretch your budget would be a JS watch Co. 101 at 38.5mm with a "TOP" ETA movement. I own one and love it, but they start around $1800 or 200000ISK.

You can get a quartz movement watch for much less, but if you want him to have a watch that will be his "IT" watch, then I suggest looking at automatic or mechanical movements only. Good luck in your search. Start visiting the jewellery stores and looking at different brands. You may even choose to go with a used Rolex or Omega in the 1k-1.5K range right now. Don't be afraid to deal with the AD. You may be able to get a Tag Heuer or Tissot your price range.
