It just so happens that I have watched that movie.
BUT...I don't get my education about addiction (or anything else) from Hollywood fiction.
And I don't recall any message in that movie saying it's okay to drive drunk and make bigoted and sexist statements just because you're an addict.
And when drunk drivers kill and injure people, the judges I work with don't say "Oh let's let the poor fellow go. He's an addict. He couldn't help it." They hold them responsible for their actions. There is no 'not guilty by reason of addiction' sentence. Nor should there be!
As Mel Gibson should be held responsible for HIS actions. He'd been given a pass on previous occasions of drunken driving. It's past time for him to be held responsible.
When someone repeatedly drives drunk, it's not a matter of 'if' they will hurt/kill someone....it's a matter of when.
But, hey...I guess that's okay to do if you're an addict.
