Please tell me I’m not going crazy - so after about a week of using my Marmont camera bag I find that the black piping on the leather strap and tassels is uneven in places as shown in the first pic and when I rub gently on it, the black parts rub off and it looks smooth again like in the second pic. Is this fraying going to get worse, or should I not worry about it?

You can either let things like this bug you (which I sometimes do) or just call it natural character and be fine with it. I like the quirky unevenness.
One thing is for sure, if you rub it and parts of the black piping are coming free, then chances are you're going to lose more of it with further rubbing.

If the unevenness is something that other users have experienced then I’m ok with it, was just hoping for some reassurance that this doesn’t mean my bag is defective!It took me a while to find one where they forgot to airbush out (!) what looks to me like a natural feature of the bag:
