Hi Folks:

I ordered the Mansur Gavriel mini bucket bag in brandy/ cleo from the annual sale, and while I love the shape, the bag feels like thick cardboard rather than leather. Is this normal? I bought from the official website, but struggling to believe that this is the texture.

Their vegetable-tanned leather is smooth and fairly stiff. It is very different from the more common grained calf leather. MV started out with the vegetable-tanned buckets and then introduced other leathers. Vegetable-tanned leather will age over time with use, and some live its characteristics.

Thanks very much for your response. I’m quite shocked with this bag. It’s from their annual sale, so I can’t return but having a hard time dealing with my reaction. Almost feels as if it would disintegrate or melt if caught in the rain.

That being said, I will give it a try and hope that it will grow on me.

Vegetable tanned leather is actually quite resilient. Water drops would dry completely without any issue. Anything oil based would leave a mark initially, but will blend in as the leather develops its patina. I use my MG top handle bag, in vegetable-tanned leather, when it rains.

I also purchased my bag from their website. I was a bit unsure about the mottled appearance. However I just started using it, and love its light weight and easy of use.
