Crazy story about an employee at one of their stores selling new release items (before they come out) to counterfeiters so that they can release fakes at the same time the new items are released.

"The sales representative has been fired from her post, but Vuitton declined to comment further on the case. In June, Hermès also uncovered a counterfeiting ring, including seven former employees, who manufactured and sold fake bags to unwitting Asian customers between 2013 and 2014, netting more than 4 million euros".

Yeah, this is crazy. I read this on the Robb Report yesterday. I’m glad they got busted. The counterfeiters were chipping the bag that directed consumers to the LV website, pretty high tech.
I saw that part too. A lot of uninformed people think just because it is chipped to the legit site means it is authentic. That is crazy!

What does “chipping the bag” actually mean? How does that direct someone to any website? Sorry - just confused in this.
The article discusses where these counterfeiters were putting a microchip inside the lining of the bag so that once scanned it directs them to the LV site. LV doesn't do this, but other high end retailers are starting to do this in hopes to combat counterfeiting, which as this article shows does nothing to do that because anyone can use that technology

Some of Louis Vuitton bags do have chips in them. My SA said they are starting to do it. My double zip jungle pochette from 2019 was bought from the store at Heathrow Airport and it has a chip in it. When it is scanned it just gives a series of numbers. My Reverse On The Go from 2020 scans with a number also.
