A recent social media ad for the Senreve Maestra Midi reminded me of my eternal quest to find the perfect convertible backpack/crossbody for everyday use. For me, “perfect” means:
1) High quality and luxe. Doesn’t need to be well known designer brand, just very good quality, durable, and beautiful
2) Spare, minimalist design. The Senreve Maestra has a little too much going on on the front for my taste ideally, but would be OK.
3) East/West shape. Most backpacks are more North/South, and I find it too easy to lose things in the bottom of bags with that shape. Additionally, the E/W shape works better as a crossbody for me.
4) Size just large enough to fit my 11” iPad, wallet, sunglasses, keys, and a few other small items. But not much larger than that. The ones sized for laptops are too big.
5) Bonus points for an exterior slip or zip pocket for fast access to my phone (the Maestra’s slip pocket on the back side where it’s protected is nice), and a completely enclosed top for protection from pickpockets and rain.
Searching the threads on these forums, in addition to the Senreve Maestra, I’ve seen mentions of the Wool & Oak All Day Bag, and the Kaai Hero (both of which come in Mini sizes that I think would work). The style of both imore to my taste, but I can’t find much about quality, durability, etc. And I can’t find anything similar from higher-end brands. The Maestra is close, but the design, thickness, and openness of the top at the corners makes me hesitate. And other posters have had complaints about quality.

Any suggestions of other bags that check all or most of these boxes?

Have you thought of the Celine belt bag?

I did see this one and I agree, it’s a good idea. It’s very much the style I mean, and I think the “mini” size would work, except that it’s not specifically a convertible backpack. I understand there are a couple of ways to wear a crossbody as a backpack—have you done so with this one and find it works well?

That's true, it's not built or meant to be convertible to a backpack.
Unfortunately, I actually don't have this bag. It's a bag that I love the look of but doesn't really suit my lifestyle (I don't carry enough stuff for a bag like this).
If you have a Celine location near you, maybe you can go check it out and try it on?

Tumi is considered “high end” for the business professional… just checking out what they’ve got right now, the Alpha Tote Backpack looks interesting.

This kind of search is a wonderful challenge… and I have to say that I think I have met my waterloo. By their very definition, they aren’t east/west. Closest found was the Tumi…

Have you seen the Viadukt bag by Ameli Zurich?

This bag looks great and I'm so impressed with the wisdom of this forum! Do you own this bag or others from this company? Would love to hear thoughts about leather quality etc....
I’m afraid not! I don’t even remember how I got to their website - probably through this forum
I found one review for the larger version of this bag: https://the-closet-journal.com/journal/ameli-zrich-bag-my-honest-review
And the company has a 4.9 rating on Trustpilot. I’m considering getting one but I might wait until ThreeCoasts has posted a review ;)

I know I’m late to this, but did you ever wind up finding anything? I’m in the market for a similar bag, I’m a graduate student and I’m looking for a convertible bag that I can transfer things from my full size backpack to on lighter workdays.

I also hate how so many of the “travel” convertible options have huge ugly logos or are crinkly, matte polyester. It’s not exactly the kind of thing that screams “Take me seriously!” When I go to teach a bunch of undergraduates who are only a few years younger than me and probably taller than me too!

Thanks also to the others in the thread for their recommendations!

I recommend the Ameli Zurich „Viadukt Day“. There is also a larger size „Viadukt Work“ and smaller one „Viadukt“. Beautiful leather and craftmanship, wearable as bag or backpack:
