I’m wondering which of the stones (thinking of getting a 5 motif alhambra bracelet) is most durable and not prone to scratches and such. I will be stacking with other bracelets. TIA!

I’ve read on the VCA subforum that onyx is among the hardest. (But see a post by @kewave re porosity: https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/vca-van-cleef-arpels-discussion-thread.867277/page-777) If you do a search on Mohs scale (I think that’s how to spell it) the range of stones, from most durable to least) should come up: as per @ramonafun, post #100, https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/van-cleef-arpels-care-and-maintenance-thread.907992/page-7 )
good luck and happy researching!

thank you for this info!!!

Stonewise onyx but truly only pave and hammered gold are worry free/less maintenance.

yes, thank you, I love that about my hammered gold 10 motif:heart: .It’s worry free and gorgeous. I just want some variety in my stack because I have lots of gold.

I recently got the magic 6 motif with onyx and mother of pearl so I was thinking one of those would go well with it.

Congrats on your 6 motif magic necklace!! I tried on the same 6 motif necklace with vintage MOP earrings a while back and I loved them together.

Same boat here:). All my bracelets are yg from Cartier. I am thinking of adding some color to make it less “boring”, more alive. I plan to get the 5-motif onyx. I think it is a striking pop up color. Please keep us posted once you make the decision, and also the length you go to. TIA!

Yes exactly, my stack is mainly Cartier. It could use a little pop! Probably won’t be adding to it for
a while since I JUST got the 6 motif necklace, but leaning towards the onyx! I’m between onyx and MOP. Hoping by the time I’m seriously ready to buy, inventory increases and I can see lots of options in person.

Here it is, worn super casually. My store didn’t have it in stock either, it needed to be ordered. They did have the one with carnelian and tiger eye though, which was beautiful.

I feel each of the stones have their own quirks so we just have to be careful using them. I have the white mop in a 5 motif and magic ring and they look brand new without any scratches even after so many years (at least to my old eyes ). I believe onyx is also a considerably hardy stone but all are prone to scratches if not taken care of properly.

This makes sense and basically what I figured. Also file this under: why I own so much gold:lol:
