Hi All

i just recently purchased a Damier Graphite Daniel MM messenger bag and read in this forum that the coated canvas can crack.

is this true with this model? will i experience cracking throughout my ownership of this messenger bag?

if so, how long will it usually take until the canvas crack?

i was surprised when i first learned of this (that the coated canvas can crack) as from what i've heard/know the vuitton coated canvas is fame for it longevity/durability.

i was wondering if i should swap the daniel mm with the damier geant petit messenger instead. since i'm scared of the crack and i don't think coated canvas look good with crack/s. what do you guys think?

btw, do anyone has a picture of the coated canvas that do crack?

What they are usually talking about is if the edges are due for glazing and someone doesn't take the proper care to go ahead and spend the maintenance money to have it reglazed. If that isn't done in time, the edges, where the bag bends, can crack. If you take good care of your bag, inspect it fairly often to make sure the glazing is in good condition, and pay the nominal amount to have it sent to the "spa" for reglazing if it needs it, your bag should never crack and should last for many years. I have a wallet I used for over 15 years, every day, that has never cracked. It's been reglazed twice though over the years when it needed it. I've seen people though that don't take good care of their things and their things do crack. It's kind of like a car - keep up with the maintenance, give it an oil change periodically (re-glazing) and it will last for 250,000 miles. If you let the oil run out . . . well, we know what happens then. While re-glazing can be a little pricey, it's worth every penny and far less expensive than replacing an item. But the cracking generally happens on SLGs, not large messenger bags. Enjoy your bag. The likelihood it will ever crack is slim to none. I have never even heard of a messenger back cracking, nor seen one IRL. Just watch your edges. It's a great bag. It will probably last you 10-15 years at least if you take care of it.

sorry but what is SLG?

woah, re-glazing?! :confused1:

so by glazing you mean the canvas or the leather trim? i didn't know they use glazing on the canvas.

isn't the edges of the canvas is lined with leather trimming?

how do one know when it needs to have it reglazed?

also, where to have this "spa" (go to LV boutique?) treated and for how much (cost)?

this canvas bag is even more confusing than a leather one, whereby one just need to condition (with leather conditioner) it.

SLG means "small leather goods," like wallets, agendas, key holders and the like.

Glazing is along the edges of any canvas bag, whether the leather is or by the zipper.

By the "spa," I just mean it goes back to LV (either to the San Demas, CA location, or to Paris, for re-glazing. It's a type of glue they use to glaze and protect the edges. The cost is dependent on what you are having done, how bad it is and what it needs. I had my daughter's zippy wallet reglazed and it was about $70.00. I had a zippy vernis wallet done though and it was $150.00 (a much more expensive and hard to repair job). You'll know if it needs it by looking closely at the edges. If it looks like the glue is peeling a little over time, you can take it in to your local boutique and have an SA or their repair person look at it and they will tell you if it needs to be reglazed.

Don't worry so much. It's VERY unlikely a canvas messenger bag is ever going to need reglazing, so this is probably a complete non-issue for you.

Also Wobbly, you won't have to worry about your messenger because you won't fold it when you store it. VERY rarely if you store your speedy or NF (Neverfull) folded flat for years, the canvas will crack, but even that is very very rare.

thanks for the reply!

this forum has such lovely and informative people :)

its a worry how such a high price goods can hide such a defect. by the looks of things, leather or even just non-coated canvas is stronger o_O

I realize this is an older thread, just had to contribute. I recently compared the glazing job on my new items: totally mm and zippy compact wallet to my vintage items, brazza, speedy 30, and bi fold wallet; my vintage items have 20 times the glazing job (both in evenness and quality) than the newer pieces.

I was so unhappy with the crap glazing job on my zippy compact I took it into the store and the SA told me it was totally perfect, and I should use it until the glazing is completely gone, then have it re-glazed. The one for purchase was identical to mine, but it is just a crap job compared to my vintage items.

I am still unsure what I am going to do about this because I know that if I wait 1 year the glazing is on me$$$, and if I re-glaze it to soon it could potentially weaken the wallets canvas (as they have to take out every stitch, re-glaze the leather pieces, then restitch everything back together). I am secretly mad at LV for not doing it "right" the first time, I mean if you pay $800 for a wallet it can at least have a good glazing job that will last a decade instead of a year. BS!

Hey, I bought my first Louis Vuitton piece in late December and well I have be extremely disappointed. The service in Selfridges was crap and the piece i bourght (Keep it Bracelet) has been a huge let down. The damier ebene canvas has cracked around the joint where the canvas is rolled, this is not exactly unexpected as the canvas is highly taunt at this point this is however a design fault. Also the gold tone has rubbed off on the edges revealing a cheap base metal not the brass I was expecting. I think if you had a bag like a speedy or keep all you'd be fine becuase the canvas isn't taunt and so will sustain knocks and bumps much better, I plan on getting a keep all as well just hope for better treatment this time!

^ also I have a 8 year old Epi leather wallet used daily by previous owner and myself and it's in better condition. I Would by leather if you're going for SLGs :)
