Just wondering if anyone can help shed a little light on this ring that was left to me by my Mom. Unfortunately, I didn't ask her about it before she died. I believe it's a Thai ruby, but I'm not sure. It's the setting that I'm thinking might hold some clues as to the year it's from or where it's from etc. There's a lot of intricate gold work with a flower on each side of the stone and the front of the setting is made to look kind of like twisted rope.

(It was given to her by her boyfriend, who was from Japan, and I believe it belonged to his mother at one time, so I think it's quite old.)

Anyone have any ideas on how I could tell it's age by the style?

I'm not sure, it could be an original design from generations ago, or possibly a recreations of an earlier piece. the best thing to do is find the history of the ring. who owned it and eventually the person that bought it. good luck!

I'd take it to a jeweler to confirm it's a ruby and to find out if they can shed any light.

Yes, I think an appraisal is the only way to tell for sure. Just thought I'd take a stab at seeing if there might be any clues in this type of setting that someone out there might recognize. It's unusual.
