My Roseau bag has transformed... The synthetic coating (never knew there was plastic on my leather bag) is breaking down. Longchamp says it's not responsible because the bag was taken out of production more than 5 years ago. So... after 5 years a Longchamp bag is considered a write-off. Weird. I thought these bags were for life if taken care of (which I do!).

Wow, that's unfortunate and disappointing. I have an older roseau and it has a small piece of bubbling. I don't know if the current ones will last longer, but I haven't bought any more of this line because of this.

OP, Longchamp knows about this problem with the Roseau line. My first job in fashion was at Longchamp and we exchanged dozens of these bags in the one year I was there. The Roseau line is a coated leather and - under certain conditions - it bubbles and becomes a huge mess. The bags at the time were still Made in France too.

I would definitely return to the store and push the issue. This is unacceptable, even for a bag that's five years old.

Thanks for your comment. Very useful! I did take it further and have been in an extensive (email) discussion with the headquarters in Paris but they are quite adamant and clearly have decided that they won't take responsibility any more. I think it's a disgrace for a brand like Longchamp.

Wow that's bad and clearly a defect. Why is there plastic on leather? Perhaps try going into a LC store and speaking with a SA? I often think I ought to buy everything at Nordstrom if possible, since they would have taken care of the problem if purchased there.

Any patent leather is a leather coated with a synthetic product. Like Vernis at Louis Vuitton. But there are different qualities.

I have 2 Rousseaus - one is patent leather and one is plain leather with the plastic coating (looks like the one in above photos).
The patent one turned yellow so I dyed it to a darker color using Fiebings Leather Dye to cover up the yellow and it turned out great. Still shiny!

The non-patent one also got bubbly and some of the plastic coating even peeled off (pics below).

Longchamp also refused to do anything about it (I'm never buying another Longchamp bag ever again!!) so I attempted to dye it. I used acetone to prep it for the dye, and by accident, the acetone helped create more bubbling - so much so that I am able to peel the entire plastic coating off. The project is still in progress as I still need to peel the coating but I'm excited! Under the plastic coating is beautiful leather that is waiting to be dyed. I'll provide an update once the DIY project is finished. Fingers crossed that the result will look better than the patent one. Stay tuned!

I also have had a problem with the Roseau leather bag bubbling in different spots. Mainly in the folds of the bag. The front and back of the bag are perfect. I was told that it is the coating peeling and bubbling and nothing can be done about it.
The bag was stored in a dust bag and rarely used and I was told by Longchamp customer service that I should not have stored
it in the bag when it wasn't used. It was kept in my wardrobe along with other designer bags and they are all fine.
Very disappointed
I will not be recommending anyone to buy a Longchamp bag.

Goodness, that is so disappointing! How are you supposed to store it then, if not in a dust bag? In a museum???
