Hi, I want to buy a long pearl necklace that can be worn tripled. Would that be opera length? About 36” long? Is 48” too long? Can you please recommend some brand, place to buy? I don’t want to go top of the line but not too cheap either. So something in the middle range? With good quality but won’t overkill? I don’t even know about budget. Any advice is welcome. Thanks so much!

If you want to be able to triple the necklace, would 36" be too short for you? Unless you have a very tiny neck, I would think you'd want it a little longer than that. The round freshwater pearls are a very nice option for this kind of necklace. They aren't as expensive as Akoyas. But I'm not sure exactly if that is what you are looking for. There are online vendors that sell freshwater pearls in long lengths (like 80-100") and you can wrap them multiple times. They usually don't have a clasp. If you want the tripled length to be short (like a choker) you'd obviouly need an option with a clasp. Those could be customized to whatever lenghth you want.

Thanks for your responses. Thanks for the link, Ahertz, it’s very helpful. Let’s be specific, how about this one from saks? It’s 48” long.

It’s so weird. The other day I tried the Chanel classic necklace in store, the longer version which is retail about $1495. I was able to triple it. Later on I called the store they said the length is 35”. Of course I don’t want to spend that much for plastic and I actually don’t want the CC logos. So I am looking for a similar one but real pearl w/o the logos.

The 35" Chanel must have been VERY tight around your neck!

I'm recommending you try different sizes on before you order to make sure you aren't disappointed with the length once it arrives.

There are two lengths on the classic pearls. If the cost was $1495 it was probably the longer strand, not the standard 35" one.

That picture of the Majorca necklace is very helpful. If that is the strand you like, but in real pearls, you could have one made exactly like that--but in freshwater baroques that look very similar to those. I don't have the name off-hand of anyone in the U.S. but that should be easy to do. The Majorca ones are 12mm. Have you considerd the size you want? You can figure the exact length you may want by just using ribbon or string to measure how you want it to look. (I think the measurement on the Chanel necklace was probably wrong--even a thin neck is usually aroung 11-12"--and if there is no clasp, it is always difficult to get the last strand over your head if there isn't enough extra room).

I think QVC and Ross-Simons both have nice longer strands, and you may be able to find some in local stores. But if you want a custom specific length, specific size, pearl necklace (perhaps, with a specific clasp too) then you can probably find that locally or via the internet with a custom order. If you live near a "China Town" (since a lot of the fw pearls come from China) or near a beading shop, someone there may be able to recommend someone locally.

The Majorca one said man-made, does that mean it is not real pearl either?

Thanks for reminding me the size, i think 12mm might be too big, something between 6-10mm is nice for daily use.

I will call the Chanel store again. I think most likely it's 48"long. So now i am pretty sure i want 48"long (i don't want too long either, triple is pretty good).i didn't find any in the two websites that was posted?

Thanks for your response.

Yes, Majorca pearls are not real pearls, they are man-made. You can probably go see some 8-10mm fwp (freshwater pearls) in your area (unless you live in a very small town). I think you'll want larger than 6mm if the Chanel necklace you are thinking of is the one I had in mind.

It takes a little while to navigate Ross-Simmons and QVC, but I bet there are some there too.

thank you ladies. after trying out with a rope at home, i finally figured out the Chanel length they told me is measured when doubled up, so the Chanel length must be 70". No wonder i can wrap around three times comfortably.

Thanks you, neverenoughbags, that one you posted is high on my list. I will ask contact them sometime.

awesome...glad i was able to help. The girls that runs futurefashionista is on the great big pearl thread. You should go there if you want anymore pearl information! Good luck!
