I don't know if this is posted in the correct place but it is jewelry related. Many of us here have collections of jewelry items that we can't wear ALL at the same time. For instance, I have at least 8 or 9 high-end watches. Some items I store in a safe deposit box at our local bank. But I worry about the items stored in my jewelry armoire in my closet. Does anyone here worry about theft with housekeepers, exterminators, cable people and teenage children or even their friends? I hope I'm just paranoid or extra cautious. But I just (10 min.ago) had a locksmith put a key lock doorknob on my closet. That makes it much harder for anyone including myself to enter! Has anyone else here done such a thing?

i don't think you're paranoid at all, in fact, you have to protect those 'investments.'

while growing up, my parents had a floor safe installed in their closet for my mom's jewelry and other expensive/valuable items, and they would also store their items in their safe deposit box as well. so no, i don't think you're being paranoid at all because let's face it, there are too many untrustworthy people out there to take that chance.

and of course, even though the insurance will reimburse you monetarily for what is missing/stolen, what never can be replaced is the sentimental value attached to these pieces.

when i was in college, i had a friend come stay with me at my mom's house for a week and when she left, my mom noticed that one of her diamond pendants was missing. obviously we never knew for certain if she stole it, but it was too obvious to be anything other than that conclusion. and we were in our 20s, so you never can trust anybody with something valuable and expensive.

needless to say, i never heard from her again after that.

I have always had cabinets in my closet that locked. I would have no jewelry left, after the 30 some years of different housekeepers I have had.
It's a must, here at my house!

I thought about a wall safe. I'm having my master bathroom remodeled in Sept or Oct and I thought I could have those contractors do a safe. But the locksmith charged me $85.00 for the doorknob, 2 keys, and labor. I felt that was a good deal and it should be safe enough. We have an alarm system on the house (doors and motion detectors) so if burgars were to break in - the cops would be here before they could also break into the closet. I was more worried about people working in the house and/or visitors. I already feel peace of mind having it. Also, I have vuitton bags in other closets that I will move into mine now and lock up too. They cost as much as some of the jewelry items.

you're absolutely not paranoid. rather be safe than sorry right ;)

i actually have a tile in the master bathroom that hides a safe underneath, i had it especially made by a contractor.

I would totally foget where the hiding places are! I once stuck a wedding band in a pocket of a purple fleece jacket hanging in my closet. One day, many years later, I put on the fleece, unzipped the pocket and found my ring! I was so thrilled. Now, everytime I donate clothing, I check ALL pockets.

^^LOL!
I have a hidden safe built into the wall in the back of my bathroom closet, but I have two other safes barely hidden that I keep less expensive jewelry in. Hopefully the thieves will go after the more obvious safes and not look further. Anything very expensive stays in a safety deposit box, but that can be a PITA if you want to wear an item at the last minute!

I think locking away your $$$ pieces is a great preventative measure. I have a small safe box with important docs and my most special jewelry pieces hidden away in my apt (I won't say where). Some of them aren't even very expensive but have great sentimental value + the photos of me as a kid with my grandparents :love:

You're closet sounds WONDERFUL!!

this is a very prudent idea! my mom's house (in a very upscale suburban neighborhood) was broken into when my stepfather had left for only 15 minutes to pick up my younger brother from school! the thieves ran out a side door when they heard my stepfather & brother returning home, but luckily they only made off with some costume jewelry that was in a jewelry box on my mom's dressing counter, and none of the real stuff . . . scary to think this happened - I grew up in that house, and I remember we didn't even lock the doors all the time at night when I was in high school!
