Limited Edition Bags: Experiences

Idk if this has been discussed in depth, but I'd like to discuss limited edition bags. I've seen collections for Christmas, Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year. Sometimes an artist will create a collection with the likes of Louis Vuitton and Gucci. To me, Limited Edition bags are items that transcend seasonal status and become art-like.

So instead of a usual monogram Speedy, you have one with little cats on it and different colors.

But my questions are... can limited edition bags become boring or dated? Are they actual seasonal bags trying to justify a higher price point? Do 'limited edition' bags feel like works of art? Can limited edition bags feel trendy?

Also, if you'd like to include what limited edition bags you own, and what your attitudes are towards them... please share!

I don't own any limited edition bags, but I saw a Louis Vuitton bag on The Real Real that intrigued me. Unsure if I'll take the plunge. I'm someone who can get bored easily with monogram / logo prints from the likes of Gucci... so seeing a fresh take on it can be alot of fun. I particularly like these brands take on Chinese New Year 2017 (Rooster)

I guess I'm trying to figure out if Limited Edition bags are worth buying. Thoughts?

I just bought one.
Longchamp x Clo'e Floirat collab
Saw in store, when in Germany.
Loved. Done.
As travel bag, print suits well imo.
Rejected the handbags, as would not use.

Also like Lunar New Year editions.
But received red mulberry bayswater for fire monkey year. And just buy new animal bag charm yearly.
Not dropping heavy money on gucci/etc. bags with roosters & pigs.
Most not appropriate aesthetic anyway.

Saw current hermes "officer" birkin in store=horrified me.
As do most lv special editions, particularly that slaughtering-great-artists thing recently.
But many like or hope to resell/flip such things. :shrugs:

The 1 artwork leather handbag I owned felt difficult to coordinate with outfits.
Wore very rarely. Tried for years.
Eventually donated.

So, if you are comfortable spending for special edition bag you will use quite awhile=worth it.
Otherwise, flushing a$$load o' cash down a pointless hole.

Best wishes.

I own some limited edition bags, but I don't buy them because they're limited. Often times, like you mentioned, they offer derivations of the classics in highly personal ways. To me, they're very much worth it when it's a design that resonates with me. I love neon pink and my first designer bag was the LV x Robert Wilson collaboration. I still love that bag to this day.

I love limited edition bags and SLGs because it meant that it’ll be rarer for me to meet someone with same bag! Kind of like the exclusivity of it TBH. I wouldn’t buy something that is LE if the design doesn’t speak to me though otherwise it’s a pointless waste of money since it is priced more than regular designs.

Dunno about resale value but I think the more coveted ones do tend to retain their value much more, but I buy these to keep.

I have a small collection of LVs and most of what I have are LEs. It just happened that way. I like each item for different reasons. However, I did not buy 'em because it is a LE piece. My first and only alma (so far) is the water print from a cruise collection. The design and colors spoke to me. There are LEs that I find hideous no matter the price tag. So if you like something and it happened to be LE..get it

I have 3 limited edition bags and got them because they were beautiful, not because they were LE. The exclusivity is fun to think about but, IMHO not worth the usual additional cost.

I wouldn’t buy any bag that had a risk of me getting bored with it easily - LE or not. Something trendy or that will get “dated” needs to stay out of my closet. LOL!

That being said, I purchased two of the three preloved from trusted resellers in the years they were sold new. The prices were at parity with (dropped faster than) non LE models. A limited edition bag would have to be pretty widely known AND extremely desired to hold any portion of the extra cost at resale.

Firstly, seasonal and limited prints will have a higher price point, usually because they cost more to make (cost of materials, additional labor, maybe even specialized equipment).
Secondly, I just personally dislike comparing bags to art; art is inherently not functional (if it were, it'd be called design instead).
And lastly, why does it matter if they become boring or dated? If the bag speaks out to and resonates with you, you should be able to still enjoy using it years down the road. Besides, these LE bags you are referencing are styles that the brands make, albeit in other colors and prints, so the style shouldn't date that easily.

When a classic bag with a very familiar shape and reliable functionality is used as a canvas for something extra that is beautiful, skillful and fun is, thats a great thing. It's perfect for it. Personally i prefer when there is something added that involves craftsmanship and is more than just a print. Although print can be fun too when its clever, but I feel like the novelty might wear off quicker, compared to the ones with more work involved. Does anyone feel the same way?
