Let's talk Valparaiso

  1. Hi guys,

I have had an orange valparaiso bag for some time, I have used it three times, but I do wonder which kind of leather it is that Hermès uses for the leather part of the bag? Meaning the flap thing.. I feel so stupid asking in the shop, and I can't look at the receipt cuz I didn't keep them back then....

    Thanks in advance

, hope some of the experts know the answer..

  2. Sorry Andzrej, I'm not familiar with the material(s) the Valparaiso is made of, but I will pose a question to anyone who knows a lot about the bag. Is it in fact named after the Chilean city?

I've been considering looking at one for my mother's 55th Birthday. She spent most all her childhood holidays in Valparaiso, and if indeed it is named for it, I'd love to gift it to her.

is one of Chile’s most important seaports and an increasingly vital cultural center. The city is located in central Chile, where it is capital of the Region of Valparaíso. Although Santiago is Chile's official capital, Valparaiso houses the National Congress. Built upon dozens of steep hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Valparaíso boasts a labyrinth of streets and cobblestone alleyways, embodying a rich architectural and cultural legacy. Valparaíso is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often considered to be one of Latin America’s most intriguing urban areas.
  3. Valparaiso is also a small town in Indiana and the home of Valparaiso Univ, which includes David Letterman as an alum!!! Somehow I don't think that's what Hermes had in mind when they named this bag.... Ha!
  4. I've been to Valparaiso in Chile, didn't know there's a bag named after it  Its next to Vina del Mar - close to Santiago - its the Port city many cruise ships stop at to go around Cape Horn .. that's why I was there ... on their way to or from Buenos Aires etc. I didn't know it was UNESCO World Heritage Site but definitely is one of the most beautiful port departures I have had.

Here's a pic of Valparaiso I took off the deck of the ship .. Sweet idea getting your Mom a bag to reminder her of this part of Chile that she spent so much time.

  5. It must be named after the place on the picture. It's soooooo Hermès no? the lovely white setting...

Okay if anybody knows the type of leather? would be great.... It's very very flat, but if you look close, you can definately see a nice grain... soooo soft to touch....
  6. Andzrej, if you don't get an answer here, I'm certain it's no problem to take your bag to a store and ask them, you shouldn't feel silly asking :nogood:
  7. Vista > Your avatar is fantastic.. wow, what experiences you must have had in your travels

I remember Valparaiso faintly, I've not been since I was about 6yo, but one day I'll hopefully find myself there again.

Some more pictures of the city with some words, below..

The port city of Valparaiso is the most charming coastal town you are likely to find in Chile.
It perfectly captures the topography of the country as a whole, with hills to one side and the Pacific ocean to the other.
Known as the port of Santiago, is Chile's second largest city and capital of the V Region - which include Robinson Crusoe Island and Easter Island - apart from being home to the National Congress and the Chilean Navy.
Its foundation is attributed to Juan de Saavedra, who arrived in the area in 1576, and has received notorious visitors since then, among others Sir Francis Drake, a nightmare to the Spanish Navy and the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world between 1577 and 1580.
Pablo Neruda, regarded as the greatest poet of 20th. century and Nobel Prize awarded in 1971, used to live here, in a four story house known as La Sebastiana, where he occupied the top two floors with a 360 degrees view of the city.
  8. i believe its chamonix
  9. What A Beautiful City....Magnificent Pictures!!!!!

  10. Okay thanks Hermesaholic, I've never seen chamonix in real life, I will do a search on eBay to see it closely. Thanks again!!!!!!
  11. A little late with the answer, but the leather flap is Rabat (scratchproof) leather. I hope this helps.
  12. The receipt of my mother's etoupe Valparaiso states "Veau Gumy".
That leather is only used for the toile combo bags like the Valparaiso or Potamos for example...
  13. H uses many leathers with their leather/toile combo bags. According to my SA at the Rodeo Drive boutique, H uses only one specific leather for Valparaiso totes: it's called CURPI (supple calfskin which is pretty much resistant to dirt, oils, etc). According to SA Curpi leather will not be found in any other H bags except for Valparaiso.
  14. ^^Btw, i have the orange MM Valparaiso and it's TDF!
  15. Valparaiso is one of the most beautiful place I've ever seen. This one of beautiful spot.
