Lady Dior New or Preloved

New here to Luxury Bags, and I was wondering if I could get some advice from experienced people ^__^

I'm considering saving up + budgeting for my first expensive designer handbag this year (the most expensive handbag I own is less than 2k).

I'm gravitating toward either MyABC Cherry Lambskin, Small Cherry Patent, or Medium Cherry Patent.

I'm thinking about the following options:
1) Bite the bullet and buy it in store. The pros is I can get exactly what I want, and I get the Boutique experience. The con is that the nearest boutique is 40+ minutes away, and I don't want to buy something this expensive online.
2) Search secondhand sites and see if I can find a second hand one. The pro is that it's so much cheaper, since Lady Diors don't hold their value, I noticed I can get one in almost new condition for around 3000 with the full set. The con is that there's very few small bags, so I would likely have to settle for a Medium. I also noticed most of the preloved bags have zippers, so I would probably have to make some compromises on size/leather, and style.
3) Buy a Chanel Classic Flap instead. They're only a little more expensive than the lady dior, and hold their value so much better. The con is, I actually like Dior bags style wise more than Chanel. It really bothers me that the bag doesn't have feet, and I've heard a lot of complaints about quality issues on the recent bags.

For your first major bag I’d suggest Chanel preloved as the quality is so much better. However, it ultimately depends on your style. Are you more of a shoulder bag person or hand held? If you do choose a small lady dior I’ll say get from boutique since you can get your initials on it.

I’m personally more of a shoulder bag girl but recently got a lady dior mini and I’m so in love .You’ll eventually “need” both lady d and classic in closet but for now my vote is chanel. They hold their value better and the style is more classic IMO

If you buy a Chanel you may still end up wanting a Dior bag anyway (as you prefer the style of Dior more), so based on that, I would go for a Dior bag :) Regarding preloved/brand new, I suppose it depends on whether you are happy to compromise on a few details or wait for what you want to come up. I recently bought a Dior bag brand new (ABC Lady Dior) and for a little while I did consider a Chanel instead, but I've always gravitated towards Dior more and I'm happy I went for it :)
Both styles are so classic and timeless though! A great choice either way :)

I used to really love my Chanel classic flaps but the past 3 years I have become more team Dior. Especially the now discontinued Diorama and the lady Dior are my favourite styles. They are a little less ubiquitous and somehow feel more “special”. BUT I have to say for a first designer bag the Chanel classic flap is a “safer choice”. But the question is do you really love the classic flap? Don’t just buy because it’s a “safer” choice. If the lady Dior makes your heart sing, you will want one eventually. By the way what have you heard about declining quality of lady Dior bags? Just really curious about that

I don't buy preloved so my vote is to buy new so you can get exactly what you want without having to compromise. I have 3 Lady Diors and 2 Classic Flaps (1 M/L and 1 Jumbo). If I could only have 1 of these bags, it would be the Lady Dior. I honestly find it to be a better bag overall. You can hand carry it, wear it cross body, or wear it on your shoulder. Unless you're getting a mini, the classic flap is really just a shoulder bag. It's not good for cross body regardless if you get the small, ML, or jumbo. I also don't find it to be a hand carry bag. I don't pay attention to resale value when buying my bags as I don't have any intention of selling them. I also focus more on what I like versus what it will sell for.

Having said all this, you'll probably end up adding both to your collection one day so it's a matter of which one first. The bag addiction is real...lol

If you want a Dior I don’t see how a chanel is a substitute as they are very different bags. As for new vs used, I would recommend new because you avoid all the headaches of authentication, you get want you want, you get the boutique experience and you know the entire history of your bag. (No one even put anything unhygienic in or around the bag).

As for the importance of resale, are you someone that likes to constantly have new clothes and accessories? If not, you can safely disregard resale value because buying something based on how much you can resell rather than how much enjoyment you’ll get from it seems like the wrong mindset.

Happy shopping!

I am going through this exact situation right now. Thinking if I should pay a bit more for a Chanel classic or get the LD. What I really want is an LD bc of the style but a part of me thinking a Chanel is better to retain its value.
Everyone’s feedback really helped. I think I’ll lean towards the LD in boutique. I do not plan to resell it so I’m not sure why I’m always thinking of the resale value LOL.

on another note, does anyone have experience with the cocoChanel handle bag vs the Lady Dior?

I haven't heard about the declining quality of Dior bags. I've only heard about the declining quality of Chanel Bags, which is one of the reasons I'm gravitating more toward Dior.

The styles are very different. I love the look of my lady Dior but I have one with a flap closure vs zip closure and boy does that annoy me ...so do lots of research.
LDs also lose value on resale...just me but I wouldn’t ever buy an LD brand new and take the hit myself.

Hmm out of curiosity, why does the flap closure annoy you more? I've heard only good things about the flap closure and bad things about the zip (like how it's really annoying to get in and out of). I was pretty set on the flap because I prefer the convenience of getting in/out of the bag vs the added security from the zip.

Thanks for everyone's replies! They were super helpful.
I definitely agree with the general consensus, which is that I eventually hopefully will be getting both Chanel and Dior:smile:

I think I am leaning toward getting a Lady Dior at the Boutique for my first bag. I don't value resale that much, because I'm trying to build a forever collection very slowly, and to me, a handbag is for actual use, not really for making money (stocks and investments do that).
Overall, I also really prefer the top handle, having feet on the bag, the shoulder + crossbody adjustable strap, and I'd rather have a bag I like 100% than a bag more popular.
I've actually looked into the coco top handle as well, and I just don't vibe with the style. (it's a beautiful bag, but to me, it feels a little grandma-ish). My favorite Chanel design is actually the boy, but that has poor resale value anyways, and I keep seeing bad reviews on it.

Eventually, I think I will add more bags that are pre-loved, but right now I'm too worried about authenticity since I'm still new to luxury handbags, and can't tell whether a bag is authentic or not without sending it to an authenticator, and the hassle seems too much.

I had exactly the same problem on the Dior and Chanel! I love the Lady Dior mini and know it’s impractical but have been leaning towards it the past few days. Thanks to you ladies for helping cement my decision! :)

Now my dilemma is the red patent or the black satin with jewels. Any thoughts? I’m not a careful person so durability is important for me.

I have a coco handle. I like it but it definitely doesn’t get as much use as my Lady Diors do. But they’re probably more comparable than the classic flap is.

The flap sags (quickly and with very little use) because the leather is so soft. It flops and sags so it falls into the bag and takes up compartment space. Then, it inevitably gets stuck on something inside the bag so you have to gently pull it out of the main compartment, lift it up, get your stuff out, put it back (all while holding the flap up with the other hand) and then put the flap back. It definitely deters me from carrying the bag but it is too beautiful to part with

For durability, I suggest the red patent. The strass on the satin version requires extra care to prevent rubbing.
