Kittens survive car crusher

WASILLA, Alaska, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Workers at an Alaska auto salvage company said a well-placed tire saved the lives of two kittens inside a truck that was crushed and loaded onto another truck.

Gary Jacobsen, owner of Alaska Car Crushing just west of Wasilla, said the kittens apparently were living in a nest of shredded paper made by their mother under the seat of a 1970s-era GMC crew cab pickup that was put through the car crusher Aug. 1 and loaded onto a flatbed trailer with eight other vehicles on top for the weekend, the Anchorage Daily News reported Friday.

Jacobsen said it wasn't until Monday, Aug. 3, that a worker heard a "mew" sound coming from the loaded vehicles. All of the company's equipment was shut off, and a rescue operation was launched when the sound was repeated.

Jacobsen said a tire inside the truck prevented the kittens from being smashed when the truck went through the crusher. The kittens, named Crush and Smith, were found unharmed and adopted by an Anchorage, Alaska, family.

"It's unbelievable they're alive. They were the luckiest cats in the world the other day," Jacobsen said.
