So, I am fairly certain my husband is getting a Kindle for Christmas from me. But I want to give him a whole package with it. I know he at least needs a cover. Is there anything I should know about the different covers? Do you want one that can fold back behind the Kindle or is a book-like one okay? Does he need a light? Has anyone bought and used the warranty?

Is there anything else that is useful for a Kindle that he should get?

I have a cover that my mom made me. I don't think I'd ever use a fold back one w/ a stand, but it depends on the person. Mine is like a book opening one, made of fabric w/ batting in it. I don't think you have to have a light really. I don't have one and it is fine. Etsy has some cute covers, some are gender neutral and less expensive than the ones on Amazon.

I just use my cover for putting mine in my bag and don't keep the cover on it all the time.

This is a pretty "manly" looking leather sleeve:

There are lots of canvas and fabric options as well that are plain, if you look at Etsy or elsewhere online.

My husband bought me a leather cover when he got me my kindle last year for Christmas. I will say I wish I had a light as well, then I could read a bit easier in bed.

I have the Octovo Solis light and the TuffLuv flip stand from Amazon marketplace. (Please note I'm showing links to different generations of the Kindle)

I use my Kindle2 at my desk most of the time and prefer to be hands-free if I'm multitasking at the computer and need to refer to my Kindle. If your husband multitasks in this fashion, the flip cover is a good option so the Kindle can be propped up.

Heads up on the Octovo light - it will not fit under a closed cover when traveling; needs to be removed and kept separate. Since I use it for reading in bed, it slides off and placed on my nightstand when not in use.

i have a kindle 2 and before i bought it i did a lot of research on covers (i know, very lame) but i found out the covers that use the holes on the left side of the kindle to hold the cover on can potentially start to crack the casing of the device. if you're getting the kindle 3 (latest generation) i'd recommend the executive jacket here http://www.medgestore.com/products/kindle3/ the m-edge light fits in nicely too. the m-edge light it pretty good and i like how it fits in the covers because there's an actual place to insert it in the case. HTH

I have a K3 and use the Amazon lighted cover but there are better options out now. The problem with this cover is that it lights unevenly so you are constantly having to move the Kindle to get the most out of the lighting if you are reading in the dark. For the most part it's great but in bed I take it out the jacket so the light can be better.

what are the better options??? my dad is having me buy a kindle for my mom and then he'll pay me back so my mom doesn't see it on their statements - he was wanting me to pick up this amazon cover but i'd love to see some other options! (covers that have lights)

I read on an ereader forum that the standalone light is better such as the Mighty Bright or e Luminator because the lights with the covers drain he batteries too quickly.

my Mighty Bright is getting delivered Monday so I will definitely post a review.

that would be great! the might bright looks a bit cumbersome... i would be interested to hear if the bulkiness of the clip is distracting (or heavy).

I have pics of the M-Edge Go Jacket with the e luminator light for the K3. The light works with one AAA battery so there will be no drain on the K3 battery.

the light rests comfortably when the cover is closed

the light is bright and clear. Much easier to adjust than the one in the lighted cover. The Go Jacket has a pocket for the e Luminator so it slides right in and hides.

great thread! i just bought DH the new wireless kindle for christmas. now i am looking for a cover. he says he will only use it when he travels so i can wait til his bday in March.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I think I am definitely going to get him a light. Still deciding on what kind of cover to get him (I know he needs a cover and not a case based on how he's going to carry it/use it).

Would a cover like this work? I'm a little concerned about the all-elastic straps, but on the other hand there is one cover in that shop he would love.
