Kering appoints Sabato De Sarno as creative director of Gucci

French luxury group Kering has appointed Sabato De Sarno as creative director of Gucci, it said on Saturday. He will present his debut runway collection at Milan Women’s Fashion Week in September 2023.

Sabato De Sarno will assume the role of Creative Director - Gucci

De Sarno began his career at Prada in 2005, moving to Dolce& Gabbana, before joining Valentino in 2009, where he held several positions before being appointed fashion director overseeing both men's and women's collections.

In his new role, De Sarno will lead the House’s Design Studio reporting to Marco Bizzarri, President and CEO of Gucci, with the responsibility for defining and expressing the House’s creative vision across the women’s, men’s, leather goods, accessories and lifestyle collections.

Marco Bizzarri, President and CEO of Gucci, commented: “I am delighted that Sabato will join Gucci as the House’s new Creative Director, one of the most influential roles in the luxury industry. Having worked with a number of Italy’s most renowned luxury fashion houses, he brings with him a vast and relevant experience. I am certain that through Sabato’s deep understanding and appreciation for Gucci’s unique legacy, he will lead our creative teams with a distinctive vision that will help write this exciting next chapter, reinforcing the House’s fashion authority while capitalizing on its rich heritage.”

François-Henri Pinault, Chairman & CEO of Kering, said: “One hundred and two years after Guccio Gucci opened his first store in Florence, Gucci remains one of the most iconic, prominent and influential luxury houses in the world. With Sabato De Sarno at the creative helm, we are confident that the House will continue both to influence fashion and culture through highly desirable products and collections, and to bring a singular and contemporary perspective to modern luxury.”

Sabato De Sarno said: “I am deeply honored to take on the role as Creative Director of Gucci. I am proud to join a House with such an extraordinary history and heritage, that over the years has been able to welcome and cherish values I believe in. I am touched and excited to contribute my creative vision for the brand.”

Sabato De Sarno will start in his new position as soon as he will have completed all his obligations in his current role.

I don’t know him well, I surely am happy to see once again that Gucci chose a less known name than the big international designer, and I’m obviously proud he’s Italian.
Maybe he will be a bit more conservative than Michele?
And probably the fact that Phoebe Philo wasn’t chosen means she’s finally coming with her own line!!!
Jokes aside, I loved Valentino in the last years, both with Maria Grazia Chiuri and Piccioli together, and then Piccioli alone. The fact that Sabato de Sarno has grown with Piccioli is a good sign for me.

I am delighted he's Italian too, he will have grown-up understanding the Italian DNA of the brand, and what 'made in Italy' means, and the wight of responsibility.

Obviously. Kering are looking for a new direction (hence new director) but because he's always worked with/for other brands it's hard to tell what his personal style is, he's still a bit unproven. It will be interesting.
(PP is coming out with her own line - (LVMH) I saw they were looking for front of house Private Client Advisors)
I didn't like the Valentino Haute Couture last week, just seemed a mess, and Dior's sent me to sleep. Neither Chiuri or Piccioli understand couture (not that I can afford it). They both understand commerce though. I am glad for so much Italian influence on fashion!

From the Financial Times:

"Kering said De Sarno, who is now fashion director of men’s and women’s collections at Valentino, would join the group soon, although it did not provide a date. His first show will be in September in Milan. Kering chief executive François-Henri Pinault welcomed the change. “With Sabato De Sarno at the creative helm, we are confident that the house will continue both to influence fashion and culture through highly desirable products and collections, and to bring a singular and contemporary perspective to modern luxury,” he said in a statement."

It does sound like Gucci is going with a much less vintage/retro vibe (although Modernism has it's own history)
