Kenya's elephants send text messages to rangers

Kenya is the first country to try elephant texting as a way to protect both the humans and the animals.

A mobile phone SIM card is placed in the elephant's collar and then a virtual "geofence" was set up using a global positioning system that mirrored the conservatory's boundaries. Whenever the elephant approaches the virtual fence, his collar texts rangers.

If an elephant wandered off, it couldn't get very far. The farmers don't have to worry about a stray elephant ruining their crops.

This is a great idea, I always wondered how they kept animals in those preserves, but this makes total sense! I hope some communications company gave them a great deal on those microchips.
