***** Let me be clear up front: this IS NOT a call for a political or ideological discussion. I do not want to discuss whether someone "should" or "should not" be wearing a particular style of jewelry. ****
I ran across the article yesterday about the controversy over hoop earrings and cultural appropriation (just google it if you haven't seen it) and I was really surprised. I just think it is interesting that there are probably a lot of styles or designs out there that I, or most people, do not even know may or may not have a specific cultural background.
I always loved my mother's turquoise Native American jewelry from the 70's (but never wear it because silver doesn't look great on my skin tone). I often see people wearing Claddagh rings and wonder if this is because of Irish heritage or if they just like the design. I am like 75% Irish and I think this might contribute to my appreciation of Celtic designs and Charriol. These are probably the only times I ever think about the cultural connections of a specific kind of jewelry.
Do you wear a specific piece or style of jewelry that is linked to your cultural background? Or are you particularly drawn to a specific "cultural" style (like Native American jewelry)?
I understand that this is a touchy subject right now but again, I DO NOT WANT TO DISCUSS WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO WEAR. I just want to hear about, and maybe see pictures of, people's lovely and beautiful items that they have and wear to celebrate a culture or style that they love.
