Jewelry investment!

No. I do not consider it an "investment" as I do not expect a return nor do I keep tabs on how much I spent on other luxury items such as purses. I do keep track of spending by I do not itemize it. It's all part of "spending money" or "allowance" after bills are paid and savings are put aside.

Good heavens, no. It's not an "investment" but a splurge...even though my splurges are a pittance compared to a lot of the gorgeousness I see on these threads.

Investments make money when the market is stable, or better. Bags, shoes, clothes, and jewels will rarely do that unless their provenance is unusual/extraordinary.

If I really like a piece and can afford it in that moment, then I either talk myself into it or out of it. lol The amount I'm willing to spend on a single piece has gone up over the last 10 years... though it is coming back down. I've gotten to a point in my life where my collection actually feels very complete (with the exception of one certain pair of earrings) and I talk myself out of jewelry quite a bit now. Same for purses, actually.

I'm at a point where I'm actually thinking about maybe downsizing, even. lol

The key is bills paid first, savings next and then spending within allotted budget without getting in debt. I think you all explained it well. I now realize that even if I don't remember exactly how much each piece cost or my total spending on jewelry, I have stayed within this boundary without jeopardizing my finances.

OP - do you mean an inventory of what jewelry you bought with date and cost? If so, then yes, I do this. I find it fun to look back and see what I bought or received as gifts. It also gives me an idea of what I'm spending.

We don't keep track of all the monies spent on jewellery however I do have a file with appraisals or receipts of anything over $1k.

This thread is making me think I should go through everything, get new appraisals and check the current value of smaller items. Inflation has certainly put up the value of some jewellery over the last few years.

I think that most people buy jewelry for the love of it, not so much for investment. As I'm sure you know, generally speaking, you never can get back the value you paid for a piece.
I know that the exception is really 'high end' pieces of Jewelry, that will be bought as an investment, which are usually not even worn, kept in safety deposit boxes.
Go to a pawn shop and see all the lovely jewelry that is selling for much less than the assessments.
Try selling gold jewelry and see that you are offered to going price of gold.
With silver jewelry, it eBay for you, unless made by a famous designer.
Buy what you love.

I have recently been selling a lot of my jewelry. My husband passed, I've had to change my life, and just don't want so much jewelry that I don't wear.
It's been real eye opening.
Some of my 'high end' pieces are being sold on consignment on a 60/40 split. Some pieces just sold outright for about 50% of what I paid for them. And lots just sold as scrape gold prices.
Silver jewelry even less. Some of the designer marked pieces on consignment, but the rest, I just don't know what to do with it.
I loved collecting it over the last 40 years, but just don't wear hardly any of it anymore.

All my fine jewelry which is gold, jade, pearls and silver, I have amassed at the flea market and thrift stores. I haven't spent more than $5 per piece with the average price I paid being $1.50.

I have shown pictures on Secondhand Bargains thread.

I have not sold any of my fine jewelry. It is for me. I do have a men's 14kt gold bracelet, i will give to my fiancee. Each piece has a sentimental meaning to me. It is definitely a thrill of the hunt and ignites an excitement to know I great deal with bragging rights that I can have nice things without paying retail prices.

Very proud of my growing collection only been a little over a year, since, I started collecting, which I have not had appraised yet, I am not a jeweler, but I have shown some of the pieces to other resellers whom have instructed me to get everything appraised and insured.

Hi!

Of course, I "know" (actually, I have it on file) what I paid for each item and I keep bills/proof of payment for most stuff, especially for insurance purposes.

Kind regards,
Oliver
