This pear-shaped 72.22-carat diamond was expected to fetch up to $13 million on the auction block at a Sotheby's sale last week in Hong Kong. But when the D-color flawless stone was presented to bidders, potential buyers wouldn't cough up enough cash for a final sale, according to Reuters.

Reuters reported that the jewel attracted a final bid of $9.24 million that fell short of the reserve price. Instead, Sotheby's said the piece was later sold to a private buyer. The price was not disclosed.

The stone was the third-largest pear-shaped diamond ever auctioned globally, according to Reuters.
