This sapphire and diamond pendant necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels is projected to sell for up to $200,000 at the New York auction.
This pear-shaped 72.22-carat diamond was expected to fetch up to $13 million on the auction block at a Sotheby's sale last week in Hong Kong. But when the D-color flawless stone was presented to bidders, potential buyers wouldn't cough up enough cash for a final sale, according to Reuters.
Quek Chin Yeow, deputy chairman and head of the jewelry department, Sotheby's Asia, holds onto the 72.22-carat diamond during a press preview about the sale.
Reuters reported that the jewel attracted a final bid of $9.24 million that fell short of the reserve price. Instead, Sotheby's said the piece was later sold to a private buyer. The price was not disclosed.
Sophie, a Sotheby's employee, holds the diamond in the auction house in London.
The stone was the third-largest pear-shaped diamond ever auctioned globally, according to Reuters.
This 1928 brooch features sculpted rose-cut diamond panther, with black enamel spots, reclining on an agate and onyx platform, mounted on platinum. The Cartier piece is expected to fetch between $60,000 and $80,000 at Christie's Rare Jewels and Gemstones auction April 15.
