I was watching Janet on Larry King and she stated she had 39 #1 songs. I am confused. I thought Mariah had the most #1 songs.

Janet Has a Number Ones CD that has the following songs. I'm confused, can someone explain how it has always been said Mariah is a sole singer with the most (beating Elvis), but the Beatles have the top spot (but they are a group).

What Have You Done For Me Lately
Nasty
When I Think Of You
Control
Let’s Wait Awhile
The Pleasure Principle
Diamonds (Herb Alpert with Janet Jackson)
Miss You Much
Rhythm Nation
Escapade
Alright
Come Back To Me
Black Cat
Love Will Never Do (Without You)
The Best Things In Life Are Free (Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson)
That’s The Way Love Goes
If
Again
Because Of Love
Any Time, Any Place
Scream (Michael Jackson and Janet)
Runaway
Got ‘Til Its Gone (Janet featuring Joni Mitchell and Q-Tip)
Together Again
I Get Lonely (Janet featuring BLACKstreet)
Go Deep
What’s It Gonna Be (Busta Rhymes featuring Janet)
Doesn’t Really Matter
All For You
Someone To Call My Lover
All Nite (Don’t Stop)

The majority of Janet's number ones have been on the Billboard dance chart, NOT the hot 100. Mariah has the most #1's out of any other solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard has many different charts : R&B, Pop, Dance, etc. The Hot 100 chart is the major chart.
