Hello Friends:

My malachite 5 motif bracelet arrived and my advisor sent me this photo. I am not very knowledgeable about what to look for in this stone. Is there specific shades of green / striation that’s not desirable or is this a pretty good one I should take?

TIA!

Hello. I don’t have (yet) malachite so not the best person maybe to give opinion. I heard before from a jeweler (maybe not can cleef not sure anymore) that the striations if thinner the more expensive. But the main thing for me would be if you love it like that, no considerations of the technical quality ? The best of course would be to try 2 different pieces you could choose from. Hope it helps and that you get a piece that you’ll love

Idk if it's the lighting or the stones but they do look a bit light for my taste.
How do you feel about it?
I suspect it’s the lighting because of how bright the YG is looking, but I am debating if I should make the trek to the boutique to confirm before sending it out for adjustment. Just from the photo I think the striation looks good but maybe I would feel differently when it’s on my wrist

I think the YG color looks quite accurate, so I'd suspect the stones to be on a lighter/ashy side. I would skip and wait for one in a more vibrant shade of green.

Is replacement needed just from normal wear or because of water damage(i.e. wearing it in shower / bath?)
Eventually a replacement would be needed for malachite, they literally dry up and fade just by sitting in the jewelry box, regardless of the normal wears on your arm. But depending on your lifestyle & your tolerance for the damages, nobody can truly predict how long it'll take before you feel the need to replace them. Also another note, when you want to replace the 5 motif on colored stones (this isn't exclusive to malachite), they may ask to replace all 5 motifs just to make sure all the stones are in a consistent color/striations, each motif will be around $200 USD so you can do the math on the total repair cost to determine if you love it enough to keep up with the potential maintenance fees.

Here's a link to a post on a worn out 5 motif in malachite, also other discussion around this stone that may provide you additional information:

I have a Malachite necklace that I bought 1.5 years ago and still looks like new - and I wear it often. If you abuse it, yes, it will need replacement but if you are mindful of wearing it, you will be fine. I would not shower with it. The striations looks good to me. The pic might be making it lighter than it is so I would advise seeing it in person.

I’ve always like malachite thus I have one piece (only) but it’s not VCA. Only 1 because of all the “bad” names to it hahah. But tbh, my malachite has no issue till today. Have this for years. I like to wash my hands up to the wrist and this guy does get wet and I also showered with it few times before (forgot to remove).

Could be not true to picture but the photo may be making the greens washed out. For me personally, I like malachite to be darker and shows some deep green, which to me makes the stone pops better. I do think the one you showed has lovely striations.

However this may not apply when there are multiples like this 5-motif (may look too busy if so). The above may work better for single stone on a piece of Jewelry.

So I guess best to try it on at the store if possible?

This is in my wish list too!
