Is there something about purchasing new that would make you completely avoid purchasing preloved?

So I saw this thread in the LV forum, and I thought the responses were quite interesting. So I'm curious how my fellow Gucci gals and guys feel about this. The OP in the other forum basically said they would avoid at all costs purchasing preloved, because they can only truly love an item if its new. As a matter of fact the OP said they had purchased a preloved item in immaculate condition, but considered selling it and buying it new...only because it was preloved, there were no defects or anything. Most of the responders in the thread agreed with the OP sentiments.

And I do understand the importance of buying new, as that is the only way to DIRECTLY support the brand so they can keep coming up with all of the designs we love. HOWEVER, I fell in love with Gucci under FG, and honestly there are a lot of bags I did not purchase while they were available in stores, so for me, many bags that are still on my wishlist I will have no options. I feel in love with literally HUNDREDS of bags under FG, and unfortunately for me, I don't have unlimited financial resources, so there were many MANY bags on my wishlist I was unable to purchase while they were available in stores/online. Every now and then I will come up on an older bag on my wishlist at the outlet, and snatch it up IMMEDIATELY! but that's hit or miss and EXTREMELY rare. I certainly PREFER buying new, however if the item is no longer available for purchase directly from Gucci or one of its authorized retailers [i.e., Nieman's, BG, Sak's etc] then I am certainly ok with buying excellent condition preloved. [no beat up bags PLEASE] There are also several vintage Gucci bags that I love, and those are only available preloved.

So how do you all feel? Could you not love a bag just because it was preloved? Do you need the exhilaration of going to the store, getting your glass of champagne, and having the SA cater to you [no one seemed to address the issue of buying online lacking this experience]. I want to hear your thoughts.

I’ve purchased many pre-loved, excellent condition bags. I don’t like to pay full price so most times, this is the only way to get what I want at a discount. I have made exceptions occasionally if I really love a bag, the designer doesn’t have sales (like Gucci or LV) and I don’t have the patience for it to hit the pre-loved market. I feel the same about all of my items. I don’t like them any less because I didn’t pay full price + tax from a store

yes, many ppl are all about "the experience" of buying new, ,full price, in the retail store. Gucci does have many sales but LV never ever ever goes on sale.

I don't have a problem with preloved, but the issue for me doing this with designer items is that it can be difficult to know authenticity unless you personally know the buyer very well, I am not comfortable paying a lot for something when it might just be a really good knock-off. The other issue is that sellers want practically what they paid for the item, may as well just buy new if they barely are discounting it. It's even worse when you are looking at a consignment source, as now they want their cut, adding even more cost. If the designer bag price just doesn't work for me, I'd rather get a nice quality new bag on sale. I actually don't care about the "experience" at all, I much prefer buying things online or going to stores where merchandise is out and I can browse at my leisure and not deal with a salesperson until I am actually purchasing something.

I know it is frivolous but I love the boutique experience, the boxing and the bows... I absolutely think buying preowned is fine as long as you can authenticate your purchase. I myself have sold many bags, you just have to be careful. I have always shown my receipt from the boutique as I am doing my best to make the buyer comfortable. Demand the authenticity cards, sales receipts, dust bags, boxes etc... do your homework and know what each of these things should look like. I detest the people that try and sell knock-offs, makes it more difficult for the honest seller/buyer.

yes I have seen some OUTRAGEOUS prices...and I'm like WTH....$200 more and I can purchase new. That's something that was brought up frequently as well. and authenticity can certainly be an issue

Personally I would rather buy new just so I am 100% sure the bag is authentic. In saying this for any of the bags I’ve had my eye on I’ve never found one must cheaper pre loved hence why I have bought new but if I did come across one with a serious saving I would consider it!

In all honesty I think I prefer Gucci pre loved. I’m more willing to get a new LV than I am Gucci. I’m not as familiar with Gucci, but I love that Louis has the same bags as they did 20 years ago, remaking the same ones. Vs Gucci is always new and in trend. I am someone that loves to think about my purchase for some time before I buy. Otherwise it’ll sit in my closet for months or even years unused, but at least it was pretty when I first saw it... that happened with me and my first luxury purchase. It was bought pre loved. It was a very cute metallic pink/rose Gucci small soho top handle that I haven’t used once since I bought it. I can’t imagine how upset I would have been if I bought it brand new from a store and paid full price! That would have been 2k down the drain! Also because I take my time, the items I live tend to be gone by the time I want to buy them! So it’s such a bummer. Like this Gucci ghost medium Marmont. Had to get it off fashionphile. I got it less than a month ago, haven’t used yet. But I know I’ll get a lot of use since it’s black and crossbody! Or the blooms collection small shoulder bag, it was not on the site for a while and I also got it off fashionphile then it came back in the website... so I think for me I’d choose pre loved. However I always prefer newer condition and for that nothing beets going in store and get a new bag. But sometimes you get lucky and people buy items and never use them and you can buy it from them!

yes that is certainly a problem with Gucci, but honestly what makes me LOVE Gucci so much, there are new designs all the time instead of the same old same old. I've had to purchase a few preloved that I would have strongly preferred to purchase new, but as you said, all of them were in like new condition, so it works out.

See I’m very simplistic with my bags. I like very classic/timeless pieces. I have no issue buying used. I’ve been super into vintage this year. Although certain things I do like in the newer collection, but I need to remind myself not to buy in a whim or else it’ll end up at the bottom of my closet! I’m dying to buy a vintage Gucci shoulder bag, but unlike new ones, none have names or if they do they are no where to be found. That’s another plus about new Gucci. You always can find a name if you buy! I like knowing the name of a bag I have!

yes I love timeless bags as well, but the downside of Gucci even if it "looks" timeless people can date your bag because they are typically only made for a few seasons. but...I love 'em anyway. and yeah the vintage are a bit harder, I love vintage bamboo top handle bags, so I basically just have to do a "shot in the dark" or "hail mary" search for "vintage bamboo top handle" and hope for the best, and that's a more rare item, and I have to search thru thousands of results, I cannot imagine searching for "Mono bag" that would probably yield millions. omg...

I’m the total opposite! I hate bamboo handle! It kills my wrist! And digs into my skin :(

This is the type of style I really like for a vintage piece. It’s very timeless and just a lot more classic!

i see so many of those...of course because that's not what I"m looking for lol. I'm sure if I were looking for them I'd never run into any.

This is slightly more rectangular then I’m looking for. It’s like the picture I showed material wise. But the shape is more soho disco/camera bag style. Again vintage so name name :,( which btw not a can of the soho disco. It’s the only bag I bought brand new in store! Recently sold it and bought the Gucci ghost (as mentioned earlier). I like a more structured bag!

I'm not a fan of disco either, everyone else seems to love them, which I'm glad, but not my cup of tea. but yup, I get it, they r a nightmare to find.
