I'm considering the Celine Ava, but I'm worried it's just a trendy bag and in a few years I won't want to wear it anymore. I get the usual points about as long as I'm comfortable, trends don't matter, wear whatever I want, but that's not my question. Are shoulder/hobo bags a trend? Is this a more classic bag or a Y2K bag? What does TPFers think?

I really hope its not trendy bag and does not become trend that everyone owns....
I just got Ava right before PI, I was planning to get it later this year, but bought it now because of PI. I live in Europe, and here Celine is not that popular (other french brands are way more popular), and I like that a lot. When I see bag all around social media it puts me off that bag very fast, so I really hope Ava stays under radar (at least here in EU), and not many people buy it because its such a beauty and I plan to have it forever

It is really amazing piece, causal and chic, young and classic in the same time.

I hope all this for you too!! It really is such a cute style. Ava is very popular in Asia haha!

The silhouette is timeless and it looks to be a very functional bag. I live in Seoul so I see the ava all the time in the coated canvas. The material you choose might be a factor to regarding if the bag looks trendy, but you should get what you like and wear it. I got a belt bag last year and thought it would look dated, but I still see so many people carrying it.

Sorry but I don’t think the Ava bag is a classic. The Ava bag is a copy of a bag that Celine sold when Michael Kors was the director in the y2k era (late 90s or early 2000s). No one was wearing pochette/baguette style bags for about 10 years until the Dior Saddle bag became big again in the late 2010s. I personally think it is a trendy bag that will last until the y2k trend ends in several years when people move onto the next thing. If you look back at past trends, the 1940s/50s were popular in the 80s, 60s/70s were popular in the 90s, 80s were popular in the 2000s, the 90s were popular in the 2010s, now the 2000s are popular in the 2020s. Pochettes/baguettes are trendy now because Gen Z saw everyone wearing them when they were young and growing up and they want to emulate what they admired as a child. That will last until the next generation sets the next trends based on what they admired in their youth. That is my personal opinion. If you would still wear it even if it were not in style anymore then you probably won’t regret buying it.

I think it can go either way. Yes, late 90s/early 00s styles are trending right now…which would include shoulder/hobo style bags. But depending on the material, she can lean more classic - IMO a solid neutral is much more classic than the triomphe canvas or another print (which is why I bought it in tan ). It’s on trend right now, but it’s a style that after owning it, I’ll have in my collection for the foreseeable future as it has a clean silhouette, minimalistic and easy design and it’s practical. Every collection needs a non-rectangular or non-trapezoidal bag, which is where I think the Ava is a good classic shoulder/crescent style to add some variety.

yes!!!!! Exactly why I bought mine in tan as well! I think that natural leather gives it a timeless appeal ;)

I think it's trendy. That being said, I just bought it in the white canvas version. I think it's fun yet practical, and gives off that minimalist aesthetic that's popular now.

To answer your question, I think it also helps to know if you're the kind of person who likes to keep bags in their collection forever. For me, I've come to accept that I can get bored with bags after using them for a few years, and I'm ok with selling. If not, maybe you could get a less expensive, yet similar style and see how you get on with it before you commit longterm.

I want to say that it's trendy, but one that tends to pop up again and again in more cycles than others? I find that short-strap shoulder bags tend to be very similar to animal print and logomania- there's years where it's not the vibe, but it comes back around in new, different ways all the time. One year it's leopard print, the next zebra. Some years, it's gotta be a big bold logo- others, the monogram pattern print reigns supreme, to tiny almost nonexistent logos altogether (but they're still there). Right now because of the 90s/y2k nostalgia, these sleek and minimal bags are in. But if you look, this large slouchy hobo Ava is JUST right off the runway- completely different vibe. And arguably something that already looks dated the moment it popped up in stores (no offense to those that like it.)

So long story short; yes the Ava is trendy, but I think if you pick the right one (or the one you think is the most versatile), eventually it'll find its way into rotation long past its peak.
