Is setting spray really necessary?

I have used almost all makeup products except setting spray. Does it work to make your makeup in place and last longer, or is it just overestimate. I have some friends who believe in it, and some who don't, and some who have never used it like me. Are all setting sprays the same, or are there some that work better than others?

Depends on the formula. Depends on what you want from the spray.

There are some that just melds makeup together and give that finishing powder effect without a powder like CT's Airbrush Flawless (which can also be used to 'freshen' makeup without touching up) or there are the ones that set like hairspray, originally used for performers on stage which holds the makeup in place even against heavy sweat like Kryolan Ultra Setting Spray.

I will only use one for under heavy lights for an extended time or going dancing.

I find it very useful for all day wear, especially since I'm a person who doesn't like to deal with bringing makeup for touch-ups.
Also very useful when the weather is hot and humid.

I use the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray.

As Papertiger mentioned above, it depends on the formula. There are ones to help extend wear, mattify, refresh or to give a dewy finish.

I tried all types except mattifying since I prefer satin to dewy finishes. For me refreshing spray can be replaced with any face mist or toner in a spray bottle. It's useful when you want to fix your make up. The dewy is finish is good if you have dry skin, during winter times or when you accidently over powdered your face. They both have their uses, but I find neither the refreshing nor the dewy finish setting sprays help with prolonging the makeup. It's more like a finishing spray.

For extended wear, I also use the Urban Decay All Nighter. It goes on sale often and it's not so sticky like other ones I've tried. I usually wear it when I'm out all day or if it's going to be humid. It's not magic, but I do think it helps.

Helpful. Thanks. I do have dry skin.
