I will admit, it is a little bit silly for me to be thinking about these things as I have no intention of getting engaged for a good couple of years...I would hope it would be with current BF but we won't get into that. At the same time, I have many friends getting engaged/married and of course in frequenting this board and others I have seen and thought about what I would eventually like in an e-ring.

If/when that day comes that we start talking about what type of ring I would like, is it possible to have:
1) low-ish profile (don't want it to stick out too much and get banged up on everything as I am clumsy)
2) pretty profile (either an intricate basket i.e. Tacori or just something cool and detailed)
3) able to sit flush with a w-band?

obviously if all 3 of these is possible I am thinking it would have to be custom...at the moment I think I would like either a 6-prong RB solitaire OR a Tiffany Novo style cushion with thin pave band. I know I won't go to Tiffany eventually b/c I would like to get the most for my (his) money. When I tried on the Novo it sparkled so much and I loved it but strangely I don't remember it having as high of a profile as it looks like on stock photos.

I like the idea of having something secret/different on the side profile. I thought a solitaire would not be unique enough for me but in a large enough stone it definitely sings to me hahaha. Does having intricate detail on the basket or other metalwork down there detract from allowing light to enter the diamond and allow it to shine though?

If I had to leave one off it would probably be 3, as I have toyed with the idea of only wearing a w-band on the right hand, as my mom told me that it is custom for Chinese women to wear their w-band on the right ring finger and men wear their w-band on their left ring finger (not sure what women traditionally do with e-ring or if they even have one, as mother does not wear hers). So in that case it wouldn't be important if there is a gap or not.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I am just bored and thinking (never a good combo) and I could use some ring porn pics if it helps explain your thoughts/opinions :graucho:

My Royal Crown has all three handled. It's actually, IMO, WAY too low for my desires. I like high settings. I actually bang low ones around badly.

hmm interesting. do you not like the lowness because you bang it around too much? in your experience, do low settings not let as much light in? I guess the height may not be as big of an issue..I'm sure it's something I could get used to :P

I don't like the lowness for a few reasons:
1) makes the stone look smaller and squattier
2) seems like the stone doesn't get light from all over and with this cut the underneath faceting is super neat. If it's too low in some settings you can't see those things.
3) i bang this thing all the time, and every setting I've had thats been low takes a beating. My high settings have not been that way and I rarely had that issue. Perhaps I am more conscious of them higher or something?

I'm with Ame, I think high settings get a bad rap. I feel like mine lets SO much light in, and I've never had a problem with it getting banged up.

thanks for the link, I :heart: JbEG! yes I actually do have the Sophie with pave hidden somewhere deep in my bookmarks hehe. she has some beautiful cushions in that setting that would probably be very close to what I want, but maybe a more delicate basket design. her settings wouldn't be able to sit flush with a band though, would they? I couldn't see any pics with a band that didn't have a gap.

The best part with jbeg is that since they do CAD they can fiddle with a design until it is just right. They can change any setting, it might cost a little more for some customization but it's worth it to get it right the first time!

Mine is a three stone and it's set low like a band. It's flush with the classic Tiffany knife edge wedding band. You can see the profile and how it looks with the band on the Tiffany website-- mine is the three stone round brilliant.

I found it easier to get used to a higher one than a lower one. But I think you do tend to get used to it fairly quickly. There's obviously always "medium". My requirement is that I see the culet clearly from the side view. And that allows for a medium height that is higher than average but not obnoxiously high. Most low settings will not work trying to get a flush fit with a straight band.

ooh that is a good frame of reference. I thought I had learned a lot from this forum but apparently not enough because I just had to google culet haha. logically, that was my fear that I couldn't have both a low setting and a flush band but I guess now I see that a low setting isn't that big of an importance.

If you get it set really high and you find it TOO high, it's easier for them to lower it. You can't really raise it without replacing the head.

I seirously need to do the FAQ thing I was talking about doing. I kept saying I'd do it last year and the year before after wedding season...and of course now that I am started up for the season I have no time!
