In Praise of Mulled Wine or Glühwein

Mulled wine, also known as spiced wine, is an alcoholic drink usually made with red wine, along with various mulling spices and sometimes raisins, served hot or warm.[1] It is a traditional drink during winter, especially around Christmas.[2] It is usually served at Christmas markets in Europe, primarily in Germany. There are non-alcoholic versions of it. Vodka-spiked mulled wine can be found in Polish Christmas markets, where mulled wine is commonly used as a mixer.

Who also likes mulled wine or Glühwein?

Here is a good article about mulled wine or Glühwein:

German glühwein
Germany’s equivalent, glühwein, is a traditional seasonal drink served across markets during the Christmas period. The word itself translates to ‘glow-wine’, unsurprising named after the feeling one gets after drinking a mug or two.

As you can see from the following traditional German/Austrian recipe, the drink is largely similar to that of its British cousin, with only a few minor ingredient differences

At Christmas markets, I prefer the version for kids "kinderpunsch" to disguise my aversion to alcohol...and to watch everybody else getting wasted.
