I’ve been excited for my work trip to Spain this week - BUT after doing research and hearing from ppl that have been there, I’m now totally reconsidering bringing anything of value. I wanted to bring my classic flap and some Chanel jewelry but everyone is saying to not “look expensive” or touristy. Has anyone had a bad or even good experience with this? Any advice please? I’m getting worried now!

There's bigger fish to fry concerning your trip. Hopefully in your research you've seen this? State Dept says don't go, CDC labels the country at high risk.

Bag wise it's never necessary to travel with an expensive bag anywhere you feel unsafe.

That has nothing to do with my post. I said it’s for work, and I’m vaccinated.

JMO. It depends on your own comfort level and where you will be staying and the places you will frequent. For a work trip where you won’t be in super crowded tourist destinations, it may not be the designer bag that makes you look like a tourist. Europeans wear designer bags too  If you are staying in a secure place; have access to a jewelry safe; are there for work; and are normally a cautious and savvy traveller, it’s your call. DH used to travel very frequently to Europe, and men don’t seem to have any problem with an expensive watch; expensive tailored clothing; leather goods either.

I take carry on luggage and never check expensive items. For travel, I wear my everyday jewelry (VCA gmop six motif necklace, earrings, watch, ring, but I do not take super blingy stuff like my bracelets and big diamonds — those go into safety deposit box). I wear everyday designer RTW that’s easy to pack, like chanel sweater and brunello pants, simple skirts, flats. I normally take practical designer bags that pack flat; for 2021 trips, I packed a goyard St. Louis; evelyn TPM; and, a men’s Dior saddle. This fall, DH and I will be traveling in Italy for three weeks, and this time I’m going to take my H Della cavalleria mini crossbody. He will probably take a 33 H evelyn sellier, discreet bc no one knows what it is. I did momentarily question whether it was appropriate post covid to take a fancy bag, but I decided, life is short Lol. For my own comfort level, I tend not to bring heavy, bulky or super recognizable bags like a birkin or kelly. If I were to bring a chanel, I pick a reissue. I would pack a lower end bag that can handle bad weather though, and there may be some instances where you’d want to turn your bag, logo to your body, but that’s true anywhere. I’ve never had any safety issues myself.

I think you have more chance of being mugged if you look like a tourist, but YMMV.

I've been to Barcelona twice and once to Granada, always carried my Balenciaga, Mulbs and BV bags, normally x-body, never had any problem. If you're in the crowd (does it still happen these days with social distance??) just pull the bag in from of you, and don't let paranoia spoil your trip! :flowers: enjoy every minute!

Where in Spain are you going? What are you doing while there?
You say it is a work trip. Many people in Spain wear Chanel. If you lived and worked in Spain, what would you wear?

Thank you for your response! Very informative!

That’s why I originally planned on wearing my classic flap. We will be in Madrid for my conference, then Barcelona for fun. I can’t wear the classic flap crossbody so maybe I’ll leave it home as I’ve read that it’s best to wear crossbody bags.

I wouldn’t. My brother and his wife were both mugged in Barcelona while he was doing his MBA. It’s definitely not a place to stick out or be risky. Enjoy your holiday without any extra worries.

Thank you!!! Yeah I’m now thinking that I’ll only bring crossbody bags for security. I had a vision of my bf and I on a fancy date with my classic flap and new Chanel earrings BUT I’m rethinking it now out of paranoia UGH

Have fun and try not to worry. I agree with posts above re being aware and just pulling the bag in front of you. Hope to see pics of your trip soon! @Christofle, I’m so sorry to hear about your brother and his wife!
