i think they work well on some people. i would be afraid to buy them because i wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on something that would make me look dated in a year or so.

I've recieved nothing but compliments on mine. While yeah, I assume that if someone thought I looked ridiculous, they'd keep it to themselves, people I know who are honest with me on other things like them. I do think it depends on the person but you're entitled to your opinion.
