The stone in my e-ring is moving a little bit, so I've stopped by 3 jewelry stores last night to see if they have a jeweler to tighten it. None did, but all said that it definitely needs to be tightened and I should not wear it the way it is now or else I can lose the stone. One of the sales ladies insisted that since I have a 2 carat stone in the classic 4 prongs setting, that I should add a basket to it, or else I'll continue having issues. She was really insistent. Obviously, it'll cost more (min $500) than just tightening a ring. I am not convinced it's such a necessity. Wondering what other's setting are like.

Also, if anybody has an idea as to how much it should cost to tighten a ring, I'd appreciate this information, too. One place told me that it'll cost $150 and it'll include polish as well. The other said $100 or more. And the first store I stopped by said $25 but they don't have a bench jeweler and I am not comfortable the stone leaving my sight.

I have a 2.44 round brilliant from Tiffany. No basket but it is 6 prong so maybe that helps with the security. Good luck and I wouldn't wear it with it loose like that, especially if the stone isn't insured.

My stone is exactly 2 carats, and I've had it in a simple 4 prong setting for 10 years. It's always been fine, until this year, I banged it moving some luggage around at the airport, and it got loose. I took it to the jeweler when I got home from the trip, they tightened it up for me, and didn't say anything about a basket. I'm trying to remember what they charged me.... it wasn't much, definitely under $100.

I agree, shouldn't be much at all to have it tightened.
Mine is nearly 4 carats - no basket BUT has/had 6 prongs. It's being remade right now and will have a basket and 4 prongs.

In case anybody is curious, it ended up costing $45 to tighten up the ring. The place was recommended by a friend, whose wife had her ring tightened there for under $100, and is located in a very nice mall. They initially quoted me $175, which was higher than any of the quotes I got earlier, so I asked what it included, and refused rodium plating (supposedly all platinum has it) since I am sentimental so want to keep the scratches, and ring does not have many. Also, I decided not to get a basket added to the ring. I managed without it for 10+ years, and a bunch of other people with similar size stones go without one.

My center stone is set in a basket with 4 prongs because of the size (3.51cts), it sits very low, I wanted it this way because it was the safest. The 4 prong solitaire in the picture is pretty dangerous to get a prong "open" and lose your stone, depending on what you do in daily life (I'm a huge klutz). Both settings have pros and cons.
Mine is also platinum that is rhodium plated, but I wish it wasn't, because when the rhodium gets faded it looks ugly. You can get it polished without any plating btw.

4 prongs, basket.

the other option, if you want to keep the 4 prong look, is to beef up the existing 4 prongs or add an extra one to each one with a sort of "double prong' kind of look.
