... but you knew it was a bit overpriced, but you also knew if you let it go you might not ever see the same thing again, would you be willing to pay too much for it, just to make it your own?

Its a frequent dilemma for me!

Well, very few goods fall in the category of one of a kind. An antique, a handmade piece, yes, but otherwise you will see that thing again on eBay. So for most things I would just try again.

If it's a grail and super rare and I can afford it, though, yes I will give it my best shot--but still within reason. I will not ridiculously overpay for anything. I wouldn't respect myself for doing that.

Yes, I would (and have!)... and have made a small profit off things like that too! Stuff like Uggs (back when they were THE THING YOU HAD TO HAVE!), then Coach Baby Bags for a season, and most recently I paid more than I wanted (but less than retail) for the Celine Luggage Tote in leopard pony skin (I die!) and then felt SICK at the price so flipped it back on ebay just after it officially sold out all over North America and made about $700!

I hate to do it... but yes have done it before! But it would have to be a very specific thing that was sold out and impossible to get!

Are we talking about a piece if jewelry?
If its a one of a kind, I had the money and it was literally haunting my thought I'd probably get it. The thing about auctions is that they're only worth what someone is willing to pay.

I have overpaid on items before. like Jen said on items that are really popular but I reeaaaally wanted it.
I have also resold items on Kijiji and made money on them! I bought and sold some sugar stack rings for a profit (bought on ebay sold on kijiji)

but I have also found some really good deals on ebay! like a pomellato veleno ring for $400!!! or my 1.8 ct purple pink sapphire that i had tested and was completely natural and bought for $30

For certain brands, i have a threshold of what i will pay but it is always less than retail. For diamonds, i have a certain pecentage of wholesale i will pay and it is pretty small. My engagement ring was even 2/3 of the wholesale price, and it is a GIA 3ex 1.3 ct IF stone and i purchased that at a retail store. I will not pay more than these pre-decided thresholds. For me part of the fun is getting something for a good value!!

I've paid above retail on some Hermes hard to find items and don't regret it. Chances are I can resell them close to what I've paid. I do regret paying a ton on some Balenciaga bags in rare colors. The prices tanked once new colors came out and I sold for them for so low. Now those colors are desirable again. Ugh.

Now if you mean overpriced vintage or rare items that don't really have an established retail price you just have to think about what it's worth to you. If you love it and can afford it and don't think you will find it again I say go for it. The worst thing is having that regretful feeling later that you should have taken it.
