Seriously. I felt something rough with my pinky and so I took it off and felt it with my fingertip and nail. I louped it and there's a crack from where the cathedral starts on the shank from under the band to the top of it. I thought it maybe was a poor weld line but it's jagged.

I IMMEDIATELY burst into tears. I took it off and put it in the box. I am sending it back on Monday. I don't know that I want them to remake it at this point but I don't think I get a choice. I don't get a refund, ever, at all. They don't offer refunds ever. So...I have no idea what recourse I have.

This is literally the 8th ring I have had cracking issues with, the other 7 were from an online jeweler and are part of why I refuse to recommend them to anyone.

So...yea. Merry F'ing Christmas to me!

That sucks, Ame!

Question: do you think you would give Tiffany another chance? My FI doesn't think that the STL staff is very friendly, but I know for a fact that the Nashville staff is incredibly warm and well educated. At least you could inspect an exact ring.

Maybe, since they will have to remake, you could pick a different setting that is higher and will make you more happy anyway?

Sorry, such bad luck! At least you still have that AMAZINGLY gorgeous diamond!!

I know. I don't understand what the hell I did in my life to be jinxed like this!

There's not really any height changes they'll do, apparently it's strictly based on how deep the diamond is. They set it to be a specific height from the finger to the culet based on the diamond's size/depth. But maybe now that they probably have to remake it they'll remake it higher? I dunno. I am at my wits end with them right now. But I guess I was expecting the worst as every single other jewelry item I own has a similar jinx.

That sucks, Ame!

We cannot get a refund and I cannot afford anything else. I am already back in the hole with getting my wedding band remade to work with this ring.

That and Tiffany will not set my non-tiffany diamond, and that's a non-negotiable for me.

At this point, I would seriously consider just wearing a wedding band.

I have had the same diamond ring for 6 years now and it's never cracked, but then again I don't shower with it, don't do dishes with it and take it off as soon as I get home.

Do you think maybe you're choosing the wrong kind of ring design for your lifestyle?

I'm baffled by this whole ring/band saga. I cannot believe that Vatche, a company with a well-earned/rating rep, would create a ring with a crack in it. I just can't get my head around that one.

I've been wearing platinum for years w/o any issues. I thought I remembered you stating that you inspected the entire ring with a loupe.......so is this crack something new??

It's a plain platinum solitaire. lol This is just in the shank.

My other e-rings didn't have this happen, though those were all die-struck plain stock book settings. This one is a cast + wire piece, so it's not totally out of the realm of possibility. Still annoying. I am pretty sure it's because they messed with that nick, because the location of the crack is not far from that area where the cathedral meets the rest of the shank.

I ended up just wearing my plain band this last two days tho because we got a lot of snow and I didn't want to deal with that and gloves.

I was pretty baffled by this crack myself, but it's not my first rodeo with cracked platinum.

I am pretty sure it's a result of the "nick repair" that really was not well done...but it looks like a stress fracture. I have had them before. It's the result of a bad cast usually, sometimes there's an airbubble that creates a pit. And then any pressure or any whack can split it. I went through this a LOT with my whiteflash bands before we just got a refund and left that behind. Die Struck rings don't do that.

This redo of my band is less a vatche issue so much as a the setting is too low to wear with an extremely exposed girdle situation that my band has, and frankly I am ok with it now that the initial frustration passed because this band should be VASTLY more wearable over the long term. I kept having chips and cracks with those diamonds as they were REALLY exposed on the sides and this will in theory prevent some of that.

I JUST got home, finally. I got there at 420pm today and I didn't get to speak to the jeweler til 6. There were two women in there buying out the store and any time this guy dared to say so much as HI to anyone else they would do whatever they could to bring his full attention back to them. They would ignore him until he diverted his full attention. FINALLY they left after spending 45K on watches and necklaces. Some other rude broad with a fur and a serious complex breezed in too, and didn't care who was in her way or in line to speak with anyone. A young couple who had an appointment at 530 walked out because they still hadn't seen him. I had a 430 appt, and neither had I.

After trying to buff it out, and finding pits and porousity issues in the wake, we sent it in. They wanted to see if it wasn't just a weird scratch. But even if it was, when he polished it, there was not prettiness left behind. There was also a prong that was lifted oddly so we are sending it in and hoping they either remake it or refund the money. I was patient with them through TWO holiday rushes, my patience is now gone. I want what I paid a LOT of money for, and I want it right. Maybe being a designer with a very detailed eye that can see 1/1000th of a millimeter difference...or that doesn't need a loupe to see a crack...or that can see a lifted prong without a loupe...perhaps that is my problem. Who knows. But I want what I paid for.

There is nothing wrong with wanting what you paid for...esp when so many don't notice details! I'm really sorry you've had all of these problems.

I know this has been RIDICULOUS for you....but remember that it will all work out....because you will make it so.

Sorry this happened...but I have to say I've never heard of so many problems with settings (and I used to work for a jeweler). Perhaps it's time to look at something other than platinum - which, being so brittle, may not be the best metal for a delicate setting for your lifestyle?

Just sayin...:thinkin:
