As my username implies, i need some opinions on which one of these rings sounds more appealing to you ladies. I have been searching for several weeks for the perfect ring to propose with & i've narrowed it down to these two. I know what she likes but I want it to be a complete surprise so i'm unable to seek the opinions of her friends (besides, they can't keep a secret from her to save their lives). Anyway...

I'm not going to give too much info on them cause I just want a generalized opinion of which one you would like better. One is a 2.6 ct emerald cut diamond with excellent cut, clarity & colour. It has step cut stones on either side of the centre stone (I forgot what the jeweller called them). The other is an oval pink diamond also with excellent clarity & cut. The pink diamond is just about a ct larger than the emerald & also has tiny pink diamonds surrounding it. The oval looks larger (obviously) & sparkles a lot but the emerald cut is almost blinding. I know she would love either one but I want to give her the perfect ring. Also, she likes oval cuts but adores emerald cur diamonds, but I fear the smaller size of the emerald cut would bug her. So I need some help from you ladies (and men, I guess), which one would you choose?? I asked quite a few people in the jewellry store & the reviews were about equal. The proposal is fast approaching & i need to make a decision, finally.

Sorry I don't have any pictures to provide. Of course, neither is in my possession yet & I never thought to take any to post here. I actually never thought to seek advice/help from a place on the internet. However, I'm just completely lost as to which one to pick. TIA

a 2.6 isn't "small", trust me, the size won't bug her!
A pink diamond! And it's larger? Those are VERY pricey. Honestly, you could get double that sized emerald and still save $$.
I'd love a pink diamond, but not w/ smaller pink ones surrounding. . . too much pink.

Emerald cut sounds stunning and classic. Even though I can appreciate the rarity of a pink diamond, I'm not into pink. Also agree with Swanky, I'd either save the money and go with the current Emerald cut or up the ct wt on the Emerald.

Good Luck.

When you are looking at diamonds that are 2.6 carats or larger, you are spending serious money. Therefore, I advice you to take time to learn a lot about diamonds and more importantly what suits you best (your taste and needs). For example, you need to decide how to prioritize your 4 C’s (cut, carat, color, and clarity) and what limit grade(s) you can tolerate. In addition, for on-round diamonds, you need to consider overall shape as length/width ratio, depth ranges to avoid bow-tie effects and optimizing fire vs. face-up size. The best internet site to explore is pricescope where there are diamond experts available to offer sound advice and guidance, enthusiastic members to give you their practical views, and plenty of trusted diamond jewelry vendors and appraisers to offer you plenty of choices and help.

My personal opinion – Cut is the most important to me. I can accept minimum H color and VS clarity. Therefore, for a specific budget, I would pick the largest possible diamond for an ideally cut diamond that is at least H color and at least VS clarity.

Round diamonds (ideally cut) have the most brilliance than any other shapes, and there are great tools available to accurately predict and assess round diamond performance. Therefore, for a novice like myself, I tend to stay with round diamonds. The tools alone can help me accurately screen diamonds before narrowing down to a few choices for further considerations such as viewing in person and/or with appraisers. For fancy shape diamonds, however, I have to heavily rely on viewing diamonds in person with the assistance or experts, as the tools are scarce and less accurate.

If the ONLY diamonds you are considering are the 2.6-ct emerald cut and the 3.6-ct oval, then I would the BLINDING emerald-cut diamond even though it is smaller. Obviously, the primary reason is the cut that yield “blinding” appearance. Second most important reason is that emerald cut is more popular oval.

Cautions - Since NATURAL yellow diamonds are much, much more expensive than colorless diamonds (D to W range), I wonder if the yellow diamonds are natural or specially treated? Another important note is to make sure that the diamonds are certified by either AGS or GIA. Otherwise, the grading or jeweler specifications are meaningless to me.

P/S I am not into pink either. If I were a little girl and a very young lady, I might choose pink.

I would pick Emerald between the two for my engagement ring. For my right hand ring, 3.6 carats pink diamond doesn't sound too bad...LOL.
If you think size of Emerald may bother her, why don't you buy bigger Emerald? If you can afford 3.6 carats fancy color diamond, the same money can get you MUCH bigger emerald FOR SURE. Why don't you go get the perfect spec 5 carats Emerald Ring for her, that'll be the way to go!

Thank you all for the advice & opinions. it seems that the majority of you would pick the emerald, and i'm starting to agree. as for why i wouldn't get a bigger emerald cut, she has very tiny fingers (her ring size is 2.5) so I want to be somewhat cautious of emerald cuts (or any cuts) that are too large. I think I may purchase the 2.6 ct emerald cut to propose with. if she thinks it's too small than i'll be happy to get her the size diamond she likes.

Christiflora, i appreciate you taking the time to write that all out & direct me to that site. However, i'm well aware of my 4c's. I only started shopping a few weeks ago but have been doing research on diamonds, & different settings, from the minute i knew i wanted to marry her... which is pretty much the entire time we've been together. i threw myself into knowing all about cut, clarity, colour, & carat weight. i've also well versed myself on bow-ties (which the oval pink diamond doesn't have), the number of facets in each of the different cuts, the names of the different cuts (i was pretty peeved when i couldn't recall the name the side stones for the emerald cut-by the way, they're trapezoids), the names & facets of the 'exotic' cuts like the flanders, millennial sunrise cut, ashoka, etc., the best angle %, table % and depth %, etc. for each cut. the colour grading difference for coloured diamonds vs. white diamonds. when i looked at round brilliant cut diamonds i would plug the numbers into the holloway cut adviser over on pricescope. if it 'scored' above a 2, it was out. trust me, i've done a TON of research for this & i know more about diamonds than most of the women i know let alone men. I had to be well versed, my gf knows a great deal about diamonds & has for most of her life (she actual has been known to carry around a little jewellry scope in case she's out & sees a diamond she wants). not to mention she is extraordinarily picky, so everything has to be perfect with this ring.

Anyway, thank you all again. I was leaning toward the emerald cut & I think you all have solidified it for me. Hopefully the jeweller wont add anymore rings into to the mix, though. (:

Hi!
The only reason some of us mentioned a larger erald is because you commented on her thinking it's too small. ;)
I agree, go w emerald!

I completely understand, and i'm pretty sure it's going to be a bigger emerald in the long run. We live in los angeles, and while 2.6cts isn't small, it's on the lower end of the spectrum amongst our friends (hers mostly), her family & where we live. I don't want her to feel that she has something that's smaller than most. Not only that, *I* don't want her to have a ring that's smaller than most. I know it's stupid, and completely unnecessary, but i'm a competitive guy. Pathetic, I know! (:

Again, thanks for the input, i really appreciate it. And thank you Monica.

Your fiancee sounds awesome, I love that she does that :lolots:

You are so sweet for doing this and going through all this trouble on an internet forum, to find the perfect ring for your sweetheart.

I'm sure you will find the absolutely perfect ring for you fiancee (the emerald cut sound gorgeous), and she will be over-the-moon delighted with your selection.

Wishing you all the best for your proposal - please come back and tell us how it went!! :flowers:

I think she will be thrilled with the emerald cut. I also think that in the long term, she will probably be happiest with it. Some girls just LOVE PINK and always have, but when I think of how women's fashion is going to change in a decade, two decades and over the lifetime of your marriage I think that the emerald cut will be a better engagement ring.

I think that on days that she just wants to BLING it out, she could layer her emerald over several diamond bands like Rachel Zoe does.

Then again, with big purchases, I always think that "good design is less design!"
