I just got a Rolex! So unexpected!!

My dad handed me a box today and gave me a Rolex! He said that he had bought this for my grandma when he first started becoming successful at work and a few months ago she gave it back to him and said that I should have it. I'm getting it sized now but this is what it looks like. The majority of the watch is silver and there is a little bit of gold!!

I was speechless. I don't even wear watches and this is definitely a nice starter watch!

It is a Rolex Oysterdate Precision. Apparently it was from the late 70's early 80's but is still in great condition.

I definitely will. I lost my grandma a month ago so it's nice to know that I have a little piece of her and a piece of my dad and how much he appreciated her.

I would ask your dad if he knows the last time it's been serviced. That watch should be serviced every 3-5 years. It will cost around $400-$500.

very nice watch, that was so sweet ! I agree with above post, make sure you change the battery I think every 8 months or so because the battery can leak and corrode the posts if it is left in there too long. Maybe if you take it to a local jeweler the service won't be so expensive.

I believe that all Rolex watches are automatic, so there's no battery to change (battery replacements are only $8).

The $400-$500 cost is to service the automatic movement inside the watch. This includes an inspection, cleaning, oiling, checking for time accuracy, and if necessary, replacing parts (an additional fee). They will also buff and polish the entire case and bracelet, so it'll look brand new.

i just asked my bf about this (he is a rolex expert).

1) Rolex OysterDate is a MANUAL wind watch. you need to manually wind it each day.
2) Reference # for this watch is 6694
3) For service - he a good independant watch maker to service..... should be about US$100- Rolex service centre is very expensive and not really worth it. Don't use a battery jocket you see at a shopping centre - try the yellow pages under watchmaker. ring a few and ask 1) how many rolexes they have repaired, 2) cost of repair and 3) how long does it take to do.

Another option is to find a Tourneau store and have the in-store watchmaker give an estimate for the servicing. That way you'll know if it needs replacement parts or just a cleaning.
