Wow...thanks so much everyone.

Never thought of going to a dogshow...will definitely have to do that.

I have so much research ahead of me...but the only 2 conditions I was given were that it has to be a small dog and i have to take a week off when i get it so that i can assimilate the puppy with the 2 cats....i guess...but who cares!! I get a puppy!! :yahoo:

Definitely no on pet stores....was thinking about a rescue dog...all our animals have been rescued!

I agree with the dog show angle. I've been pretty active in the Corgi world for years and have seen lots of mistakes made by people rushing to get a puppy, the worst of which is buying from a pet store. Remember a reputable breeder does not advertise in the paper. Make sure you research the breeds. Learn about the genetic problems and make sure the pup's parent's have been tested clear of them. Also, a reputable breeder will have a spay/neuter contract. And a reputable breeder will be a great resource for help with training and health. Your breeder will attempt to match a pup's personality with your's, so don't worry if you have to wait for another litter. Owning a dog is a longtime commitment. It takes lots of effort to get the right one.

When I was deciding on a Corgi, I contacted the local Corgi club for help. I was able to visit local reputable breeders and go to Corgi Specialty shows. Your local club should also have a rescue contact, should you decide to rescue. Good luck and keep us posted.

Congrats! So happy to hear you're thinking of a rescue. petfinder is a great spot to find a rescue. You may want to consider an older dog (2 -3) small dogs live longer and a lot of them will be over the constant chewing and some may be house trained too. I would also recommend googling "dog breed selector" for some help figuring out what breed fits in with your lifestyle/personality/household. Googling the different breeds should also help you get a good idea of what type of dog will work best for you. Congrats again!
congrats!!! another nice thing about older dogs is that they may be used to being around cats, and will more than likely ignore the cats that you already have. can't wait to see pictures when you get your baby.
