So I am upgrading my engagement ring *cough* for the 3rd time in 1 year :D and now I really want earrings to match it. Is there a huge difference between a certified diamond and a "regular" diamond? I've never owned any jewelry before so I am lost here. They price for certified 1/2 carat earrings is only $50 less than "regular" 1 carat. Of course I want the bigger ones but is the quality that much better for the 1/2 carat certified earrings? BTW my engagement ring is certified.

The real reason to go Certified is simply because you know what you're getting and if it's on paper you have recourse if it's misrepresented.

I think certified diamonds are overrated, pricey due to the publicity and hype of HRD, IGI, GIA, EGL, AGS etc. Over here in Asia where it is not a norm to insure jewellery, certification only means one thing, it is on paper. When it comes to resale value, jewellery, especially diamonds do not hold much....unless it's gold.

I see quite a number of diamonds with just good cut, strong fluorescent - can been seen in naked eyes as cloudy comes with certificate. So it's only stating it on paper.

So if you like bigger diamonds but it's uncertified then go for it. Moreover if they are earrings, you can comprise on the 4Cs for better value.
