Hello everyone,

I stumbled upon this forum because it appears that the users here are probably the most knowledgeable out of any other community on the internet, so I figured I'd give it a shot and ask for some help! :p

I've never liked jewelry all that much, but my girlfriend of a little over three months seems to love it (surprise, surprise). She's got a variety of necklaces and for this upcoming Christmas, I would like to get her something nice. My price range is around $250-300, but I am willing to go a bit higher if I think she'll like it.

Currently, she has a pair of two keys in her arsenal and a few other random necklaces. Her current keys are gold -- about 1.5" or 2.0" in length. Anyway, for awhile now I catch her eyes glazing over the Tiffany Keys Collection and I have a few questions about those and jewelry in general.

Whenever she wears her current keys she's always wearing them as a pair. Do I get one, or do I have to get two? What is the standard? Is it poor etiquette to only get one?

I was also wondering if this (Option #1) one might appear to be too "bulky" for a necklace? Does anyone have this one and could shed some light on if they like it or not? I'm not sure if she'd like a large heart shaped or not, but I was also considering this (Option #2) one, as it doesn't seem so bulky. Which option would prefer?

Also, what do most of you prefer as a chain length for these keys collection? If I do decide to get a pair for her, do I get the chains at different lengths or should they be at the same length? If I get two, are they usually the same size or should one be larger than the other?

Forgive me for being a newbie in this field, but I honestly have no idea what I am doing and I don't want to @#*% anything up. :weird:

PS: Please let me know if I shouldn't have made a new thread. I wasn't sure if I should have resurrected this old thread instead.

Thanks,

Aw, you are a really kind guy and I could let this heartfelt post go unanswered.

However, I should add I know NOTHING about the keys, only having seen them in real life yesterday! Also, I expect I'm considerably older than you or your girl, so my comments may well be totally off course LOL!

I don't think there is an etiquette to how many of these you're "supposed" to buy (or if there is, I dunno about it ;) ) I think she'd be thrilled to receive a blue box anyway.

So, she has two golden keys already? Can you recall which ones she already has so we can see her style? Does she wear them on the same chain?

Personally, I'd get her a different length chain, so she could wear them all if she wishes. Longer if you go for a bigger key, shorter for a smaller key.

Out of your two choices, I personally prefer option 2. But the locket is a fabulous idea - you are gonna have to put your photo in it too, of course ;)

If I had a choice - I think this one is cuter.

Good luck!

What a cute thread! You are so thoughtful for going through all this :) after Christmas you should show her the thread, I know it would make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I say get one key, option 2 because I agree the option 1 seems a little bulky, and spend the rest on a nice dinner out or a date where you present her the gift to create a memory to go with your gift.

I love option 2! It's open, and less bulky.

Also, I always have a problem with lockets - I love the idea of them, but they feel meaningless without pictures - and I never seem to get the right pictures!

I would put it on a longer chain - that way she could wear it with her others for a layered effect - she can also take it off the chain and put it on the necklace with one of her gold keys, so the silver and gold contrast.

I prefer #2 as well. #1 just seems outdated maybe--I think that is my general feeling on lockets. I feel like a locket is something your kids give you on mother's day or the like.

I like both and don't think you could go wrong with either.

The smaller key should be on a shorter chain (like 17"), while the larger key could be worn as a long necklace on a 32" inch chain (the oval chain is the nicest IMO). You absolutely DON'T have to get a pair. Most of us wear the keys separately, though several girls on this site layer them. Maybe you can get her one now and plan on getting another for Valentines Day?

My bf got me #2 earlier this year and I love it. I'd have to say that layering this piece is easy to do because it's a very simple/clean design. I wouldn't expect someone to get me two necklaces. If anything..get her one, and for another occasion you can get her another.

You're so sweet! I love the thought you've put into this!

Option #2 for sure. And no you definitely don't need to get two... that's just a "look". She could pair the one you buy with one of the ones she has, on one chain or on two...

I love that you want to get her a heart too! I prefer 18 inch chains... does she wear hers long or closer to her collarbone?

Good luck!!

Thank you all for the great advice!

I think I will pull the trigger and buy this one. It's a 2" instead of a 1" like I previously linked in the first post. Maybe in the future I will get her the matching 1" later on. I'll pay close attention to what length she currently wears over the weekend. I'm gonna guess a 20", but I could be wrong -- which won't be the first time. Hah.
