As we're expecting to be hit with some of the impending Hurricane Irene tomorrow, I've been thinking about what I'd do with my jewelry in a natural disaster and/or being evacuated. It may be a good idea to put any jewelry that you would be heart-broken if you lost it in some sort of waterproof container. If you had to evacuate, and it wasn't in your safe deposit box, and you couldn't get to the bank, what would you do with it? Would you take the risk of taking it to a public shelter (I wouldn't!), or would you hide it at home, hoping the looters don't find it, should anything bad happen to your home? (I'd also be afraid to do that!) Has anyone had experience with this?

Of course, the first and most important things to be saved are my family and my pets. However, I would at least try to take the box of items that DH has given me over the years (I store them together. If there's a fire, and I've save the family and my cats, it would be the next thing I'd grab, if I could safely do so).

To those in Irene's path: stay safe. I'm thinking of you. Let us know if you're ok!

STAY SAFE all of you!

I have a "tornado bag" actually. That plus my lock box is what I'd grab. I don't have much in the way of jewelry, so I'd grab the bag, the lock box and my purse and I'd probably have all that I do own of importance, with the exception of my backup hard drive which I'd also snag.

wow, I do not know what I would do in this situation. I have prepared in case of fire. I keep my cats carriers in a blanket box with collars in the carriers. my jewellery I would just leave if need be, it can burn as long as I have my pets and family!! BUT if I had time to prepare such as in case of a hurricane I would take it to a bank and lock it away in safe storage. I am very blessed to live in Ontario, Canada where we do not have earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, mud slides, avalanches, etc... I have never had to experience a life changing natural disaster and I cannot imagine being in the path of one of mother nature's storms.

I'm thinking of everyone that may be affected by this hurricane and i'll prey for the safety of everyone's families, pets, homes and personal property stay safe everyone:hugs:

I think I would wear it underneath my clothes - and also carry something extra to protect myself - anyone who tries to steal from me wont be getting away alive.....

I keep all my favorite jewelry in pouches and a small carry case and have it all contained in a large canvas zippered box with handles. (from the Container Store). That way, in case of a fire, I can grab the canvas box and run. I also keep a lock box with all of my important paperwork (passports, birth certificates, etc.) and would grab the lock box if there was a fire.

I have a safe set in the floor (cement slab). it's waterproof & fireproof, so the jewelry would stay here.

I do know plenty of ladies who take everything to the bank (safety deposit box) when a storm is on it's way here.
