I've been thinking a lot about those drab green Barbour jackets that the British royals seem to favor for their hunting expeditions. LL Bean also makes a similar style here in the US, but I've never heard of someone actually wearing one to hunt in.

I know in Maine, people hunt on each other's land (unless that land is posted) so a very bright jacket is usually preferable for the sake of not accidentally getting shot by other hunters or while going for a walk in the woods.

I almost ordered one the other day, figuring I could style it sort of preppy with penny loafers and a mulberry purse. I just can't make up my mind though. What do y'all think of this style of jacket?

I like it, would totally wear one, perhaps not for hunting (not my thing ), but just as an everyday jacket. Don't think there's anything particularly preppy about it. It does look polished, but in a good way. And I wouldn't say it's fancy, but rather a well-made nice-looking jacket. Would go wonderfully with the loafers and a Mulberry bag you mentioned.

I like it! There's lots of different flavors of it too as they're sort of trendy these days (even though I consider them a classic). Like the scandi brand Toteme has an oversized version I was looking at the other day.

It’s not just the royals! I love Barbour and Barbour International as a brand. I own 3 summer weight quilted Barbour jackets, 3 winter weight quilted Barbour jackets, a black padded waterproof Barbour jacket and a green wax Barbour jacket. The last looks great with my Hunter wellies for walking my dog in the winter - a working black Labrador! I’m not into shooting but I grew up around people who did.

And I own lots of Mulberry bags!

So I ordered the navy blue one and I do think it's cute, but they do seem to run very large!

I'm mostly just undecided on that swampy green color, but maybe it will grow on me as fall approaches. I might pick up the waxed green one at some point.

I really love Barbour’s waxed coats! The green is very rich and attractive in person. A friend of mine has one and it just keeps looking better with age.

Another friend has the blue barn version with the corduroy collar— I personally couldn’t pull this off, but she has a preppy, Cape Cod-esque style and it really suits her. Everyone I meet who owns one loves them; the green is definitely on my wishlist!

Well, I returned the Barbour jacket that was too big and ordered the next size down. It has arrived and it also doesn't fit me! I thought I knew how British sizing worked, but now I have no idea what size to order. Should I order three or four full sizes down from my normal size? I don't really want to have to go through this process again.

Barbour waxed jackets are more all-weather walking, bird watching or 'messing about in fields' with.

What you wear hunting depends on what you're hunting, but in Britain people usually buy field jackets for, deer stalking and grouse/pheasant shoots (3 of the most popular types of hunts) because days are long and usually cold too. Filed jackets have large pockets at the front and many others besides and are very warm yet breathable. Colours are he closest to the landscape you'd be surrounded by. You would never wear a bight jacket because yould be seen by your prey from miles away.
