How young is too young for Hermes?

Hi everyone,

I am considering making my first Hermes bag purchase (I already have a few of their accessories). The issue is that I'm still a uni/college student. I am thinking of either a Black/White(toile?) Herbag or a Garden Party, but do you think that Hermes is a bit 'much' for a 20-yo?

I don't think I'd be using my Hermes bag during classes, but rather as a casual windowshopping/weekend brunch bag. I do plan to use it though, and not just have it snooze in its dustbag all day. What do you think?

How old were you when you first bought your first Hermes bag or accessory?:p

Valextra, if you love Hermes and can afford it, go for it! I think the scarves, the vintage kelly bags (check out the recommended reseller list) and other accesories are timeless and stunning on young gals :)

Also check out a thread - something like, look of the century? there is a pic of dodo2005 in motorcycle boots, a jacket with a ruff collar and a pink retourne kelly that is one of my inpirations

I was 17/18 when my then boyfriend/now DH got me my first H 90 carre in 1985. I got my first BBK from akiko1120 for 2K usd last year.

HTH & happy journey into Hermes!

I would never presume to say you must be a certain age for Hermes. I would say though - you are too young for Hermes if you cannot appreciate the workmanship, the quality and the quiet, discreet elegance of each piece (and this has nothing to do with physical age at all).

That said, I think the Herbag and GP are really great bags! (There was a girl at my school who carried a GP to the exams... let's just say I spent more time oogling her bag than actually doing last minute revising! :p)

I was 21 when I was given a CDC (I said no to the matching belt  and I will never live that down) That shows me now that I certainly would not have been ready for a major H purchase at that age.

You certanly sound as though you are appreciative of the quality even just asking this question.

I have brought many gifts for others (and myself of course) since owning my CDC but do not own one bag yet as perhaps like you I wanted to be sure I was sure of my choice, as an H bag should IMO be something to last a lifetime - an investment and I don't mean just of £$£$.

Even I am not sure that a Birkin is essential for me yet although in time I do plan to buy one. The Garden party is nice but I say go for the style that makes your heart skip a beat and your lifestyle demands.

For me - I am gaga over the Bolide and the Web1923 and when one of either come up in the right specs I will buy it.

Good luck with your decision ;)

I only have a few clic-clacs right now, but I would love a CDC! They look so edgy but classic at the same time!

Maybe I'm dithering/holding off since I'm not yet sure; I like the shoulder strap/messenger capability of the Herbag, but I feel it does look very similar to a Kelly, and I don't know if I'm ready for a Kelly yet! :oh:

As for lifestyle demands, I would like a classic bag that I can just throw things in to and use (more or less) any time during the day. I have a few bags that are versatile, but I wouldn't call them classic (they're all too 'cute' :shrugs:). I see Hermes bags as having that more classic/enduring quality, and they're nice to look at too!:D

This is me giving advice to you but I was told to do this by one of my Mother's freinds who is a long time devotee of H.

Choose a bag in the same way you might buy your first car or your wedding dress. Build a relationship with a personable H SA. Tons of reasearch, lots of discussion, many pictures and price lists and self reflection. Make a colour chart and model pro and con list. Check bank account. Check for availability. :smile1:

Good luck sweetie -

I love Birkin, because it is a similar item as property
you can consider a investment
unlike lv and chanel, used item decrease value during time matter
a second hand birkin can increase value several years later after you use it
