: P.I. Wow, you're good at this.

But remember, it's extremely difficult for the average shopper— and even a trained investigator— to tell a fake from a photo alone. And while GenuOne's CEO Mark Turnage cautions that "there is no magic bullet" when it comes to spotting counterfeits online, here are some tips you can use to avoid getting burned.

1. If the price looks too good to be true, it probably is. Items priced substantially lower than their retail price are probably counterfeit.
2. Read listings carefully, and look for inconsistencies between the product pictures and the photos on the brand owner's corporate Web site. Are labels missing? Are there misspellings in the fine print? Is the printing blurry? Does the packaging look sloppy? Also, watch out for strange colors or new styles you haven't seen in stores: They're probably fakes.
3. Check the seller's feedback rating before you bid, and if you have questions about an item, don't be afraid to ask before placing a bid. Don't buy from sellers with a negative feedback rating, and don't buy from a seller that doesn't offer a secure payment option such as PayPal.
